Custom Sheds by Keith was founded in 2010 with the simple idea of building the HIGHEST QUALITY SHED AVAILABLE. I build my sheds like a house, not like a shed. I also build my sheds with aesthetics in mind. This is going to be a structure that will be in your yard for the life of your house, so it should add value and beauty to your property. Every other company builds a disposable shed in a factory. Most of them will only last for 10 years, and they look like a shed. On top of building a superior product, I will provide superior customer service which is unheard of in the construction business. I had watched them build sheds for two of my neighbors and was impressed by Keith and his experienced crew members, so I knew up front the quality of the construction to expect. They are very professional and really care about providing excellent service and keeping the customer happy. They showed up on time every day, answered my calls in a timely manner, kept the job site clean and took care not to trample my flowers next to the job site. They worked closely with me to ensure I knew exactly what went into the detailed line-item costs for everything so there would be no surprises. An example of their customer service to my project: I decided to change a few things at the last minute. I wanted to install a second set of double doors, enlarge the size of window trim, install plywood on the ceiling rafters. There was no drama at all, they just counseled me about what the additional work would cost. I agreed to the increase and they worked hard to finish the job by the deadline. How long shingles last depends on the type of shingles you have on your roof. Asphalt shingles normally last anywhere from 15 to 30 years, metal shingles can last anywhere from 15 to 100 years, and tile shingles can last anywhere from 50 to 100 years or more.

Just like when you’re shingling a roof, you can install felt underlayment under a metal roof, but a synthetic underlayment like adhered ice and water shield is the best option. These use adhesives rather than mechanical fasteners, so you have fewer penetrations going through your roof deck and a lower risk of leaks. Ice and water shield is also easier to install because you don’t need additional tools or fasteners to attach it to the roof deck.

You can replace a roof in the winter, though it’s not the most popular time to do so. The biggest drawback of winter roofing work is the weather. Snow and ice make for dangerous, slippery working conditions. Plus, shingles can only be installed in temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees. 

The best time to replace a roof is in the spring or fall when the weather is mild. However, you can likely save some money by booking the job in the winter off-season, when roofers have more availability. 

You can technically install a metal roof over asphalt shingles, but it isn’t a good idea. This is because you’re essentially creating a moisture barrier under the metal, which can easily—and often does—lead to significant mold damage. Removing an asphalt roof isn’t terribly expensive, and some roofing companies might cut you a serious labor and disposal discount if you add it to a new install.

You cannot replace granules that have been lost off shingles. The granule embedding process is part of shingle manufacturing, and once the bond holding the granules to the shingles has been lost, the granules are gone for good. Shingles with granule loss must be fully replaced to continue offering adequate protection.
