"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"Kory and his team did a great job and delivered on every promise and deadline. The crews were prompt and did a great job of taking care of our home while working. They worked hard to minimize the damage from falling debris during removal and the final job looks outstanding. Very happy that I went with Woodlands Roofing!"

"Four words to describe RBC Roofing (and Mr. Harvey Boulanger in general): Professional, Personable, Prompt and Responsive. From the bidding of the work right down to the last detail of fitting my antenna back on to the new roof, the work went very well both as bidded and expected. The crew (every single one!) was polite, knowledgable about the work being performed, and very responsive anytime I climbed up the ladder to take a look and ask lots of questions about the process and the work being performed. I am responsible for not only my own residence BUT for my tenants as well (I own a duplex, live in one side and rent out the other) so I wanted to ensure I knew what I was talking about when I informed my tenants all was well and that their roof would not leak again !! I can say, with confidence, they'll be no more leak issues (and probably none for many years to come!) More specifics: 1) The quality of the work was exceptional right down to the last detail. 2) Mr. Boulanger was ALWAYS available if I had any questions about anything before, during and after the process and the replacements (by phone, email, and text) 3) The price was reasonable and fair (I had done other bids before I selected RBC Roofing), 4)The work was performed within the schedule that Mr. Boulanger laid out, AND 5) I got a 10 year guarantee to boot ! In my experience as a landlord renting this property out for many years and having dealt with roof repairs and replacement, that's virtually unheard of in the industry. You can't go wrong having RBC come out and at least do you a bid -- I highly recommend them for all your roofing repair and / or replacement needs. (Flat roof or otherwise!!) Thanks RBC for a JOB WELL DONE!! During the next rainstorm, I know I'll sleep like a baby !!"

Skylights questions, answered by experts

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Yes, solar tubes are easier to install than skylights because they’re lighter, smaller, and easier to handle. They also require less roof cutting and have a faster, simpler installation process. This means they’re a more DIY-friendly option for homeowners who want to add more natural light to their homes.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.
