When cleaning gutters, your pressure washer shouldn’t exceed a pressure rating range of 1,500 and 1,800 psi. Remember—gutters are designed to withstand the pressure of heavy rain and not much else. While the force of the water in a pressure washer will get rid of the dirt and debris, too much force can damage your gutters and, if you’re not careful, your house. A high PSI will have you prepped to call a professional when your gutter leaks. It could also mess up the gutter joints or even blow the tiles off of your roof.

This question requires personal discernment. Most homeowners leave gutter guards in place throughout the year. However, metal gutter guards can potentially freeze at low temperatures. In areas with heavy snowfall and ice formation, ice dams and snow can build up on metal gutters. Inexpensive foam gutter guards should also be removed in places that experience freezing winter temperatures due to the fact that frozen guards can become breeding spots for moss and weeds while unthawing in the spring. If you’re replacing your roof, you don’t need to worry about replacing your gutters as long as they’re functional and in good condition.   • Adding a splashguard. This is the simplest method. You can purchase a splashguard at your local hardware store and place it under your downspout. This will act as a funnel to direct water away from your house.

  • Add downspout extension at the end. You can also add an additional downspout to the end of the “elbow” as a way to extend the water further out into your yard. Some hardware stores sell downspouts with a flexible extension that you can maneuver around your yard.

The above alternatives are great options if your gutters are above a slab foundation that you wouldn’t want to dig up. One downside to these methods is if your yard slopes back upwards to your home, then the water won’t actually flow away. In which case, burying your downspouts if the best option to avoid flooding and water damage to your home.
