"Mr. Flores was incredibly prompt & came out to give a free estimate. His quote was fair, and he & his team did a great job cutting & removing a 40-foot tree that was damaged in the mighty winds we've had recently. They cleaned up & did a fabulous job! My neighbors were so impressed that they hired Jose Flores Landscaping & Concrete to trim their trees & do concrete work for them as well. Thank you, Mr. Flores & team! "My driveway has a flat section at the top and a steep narrow section going to the road. The flat part came out very well and is a big improvement. Aaron Williams was upfront about the possibility that the steep section would be difficult to work with. The chip seal did not take very well and the loose gravel is a problem. We ended up sweeping the loose gravel to the side in order not to slip when driving. It looks much better than it did but this was not the result we had hoped for. My driveway is 40 years old which is part of the problem."
"I had some very specific requirements for my 12'x23'x11' awning. I also had to postpone the project 2 months. But, Lucio and crew built the awning to my requirements exactly. As soon as material was available, they were out on the job and finished in a day. It even rained a little on them, but they got it done. Will be giving them a call when I'm ready to do the next awning."
"After four interviews, Hill Country Road Paving was the only one that included fixing some weak spots on my asphalt driveways. (14,500 sq ft in total). They did a 2 course chip seal in 6 hours with the edge asphalt remediation. Their crew was respectful to the extent that my neighbor told me she was impressed by their assurance that they wouldn't block her driveway during the effort. Not only did they do great work expeditiously but, at a cost less than the other three contractors. I bonus them $100 per worker on top of their charge. I would definitely use them again."
In terms of durability, concrete driveways can last more than 50 years when properly maintained, compared to the typical 30 years for an asphalt driveway. However, the durability depends on the climate, base material and thickness, and thickness of the concrete or asphalt used. The longevity of concrete or asphalt driveways also depends on how well it’s maintained and the amount of wear and tear it endures.
Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.
New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.
During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.
The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.
When comparing installation costs, asphalt is often less expensive upfront than concrete. Asphalt prices typically range from $7 to $15 per square foot, while concrete can range from $3 to $18 per square foot. However, long-term costs should also be considered. Concrete driveways generally last longer (up to twice as long) and require less maintenance, which can make them more affordable over their lifespan. While asphalt has a lower installation cost and is easier to repair, it requires more frequent maintenance, such as sealing, which can add up over time. Therefore, while concrete is more expensive initially, its durability may offset the cost in the long run.
While the specific timeline for building a driveway can vary based on driveway length and local weather conditions, the average concrete driveway can require several days to lay down all of the different parts of the driveway. The curing process may require you to avoid using your driveway for a week following construction. Heavier vehicles should be kept off of a new concrete driveway for several weeks. Building a gravel driveway may take just one to two days in total.
