"We hired J&S Construction remodeling to repair a shed roof, steps to our wooden porch, and to install a railing on our front porch steps. Couldn't be happier with the outcome. He did a great job and quickly. We were working within a time frame and appreciate him accomplishing everything in under 3 days. His estimate for the repairs was affordable and on par with the other estimates we received. We will be hiring J&S again in the future. * I tried uploading photos but it says the file size is too large."

"I had multiple bids and I went with the most economical for my budget. The owner offered to match the lower bid but I had already committed to the other company. The owner & staff were quite professional and courteous. I would feel comfortable hiring them and or recommending them to others"

"Mr. Robert did a very good job with the drywall repair and painting work. The cost estimate was very reasonable among other contractors in the Mount Juliet, Tennessee area. He was very willing and obliged for a free estimate, which I really liked. Mr. Robert is very responsive to questions and has kept his time commitments, he is easy to communicate with and willing to provide suggestions and guidance on how to go about the project work. Overall, I am very pleased with the quality of the drywall repair and painting work (ceiling, and walls). I will not hesitate to hire him again to repaint my whole house."

"I was extremely impressed with the service that I received from Progressive Painting! The entire process was very easy for me! Dennis answered my initial call on my first attempt and scheduled a visit to give me a quote on wallpaper removal and painting.  I received the quote within 24 hours and accepted immediately.  It was a fair quote for the amount of work and in line with my expectation. I had a very short timeline and new appliances being delivered the next week.  Dennis said he should be able to meet that deadline for me and he actually completed the work early! Dennis was kind, easy to talk to, professional, and it was easy to trust him quickly.  I felt very safe inviting him into my home.  The quality of work was extremely high.  Dennis and the people who work with him left my home clean.  I wasn't sure what to expect to arrive home to on wallpaper removal day, but I arrived home to a clean kitchen that simply didn't have wallpaper anymore! It was so nice!! They had repaired all blemishes on the drywall that the wallpaper had caused. Then on painting day...they sanded, primed and painted! And they did a great job of keeping dust from going to other rooms and they cleaned up after they were done. I arrived home to a clean and expertly painted kitchen! It was so nice! The best words to describe my experience are Wow and Fantastic! I can't thank Dennis enough for the work he did and for making my kitchen makeover experience very easy!"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can install drywall over plaster, but there are important factors to consider. While it can create a smooth, flat surface, it is often not the best approach. Installing drywall over plaster will increase the wall's thickness, which can cause issues with existing window and door frames that may no longer fit. You might also need to adjust power outlets to keep them accessible. A better, though more expensive, option is to remove the old plaster and lath entirely before installing new drywall. Drywalling directly over plaster seals in the old material, and if any problems arise later, you will need to remove both layers down to the structural beams for repairs. Given the potential complications, this job is best handled by professionals.

You can plaster over regular drywall, but it's essential to prepare the surface properly. Before plastering, the drywall should be clean, free of dust, and any loose or peeling paint should be removed. Applying a primer specifically designed for plastering can improve adhesion. Some professionals recommend applying a base coat of plaster or joint compound to create a better surface for the plaster to adhere to. Proper preparation ensures a smooth and durable plaster finish over regular drywall.

Whether a drywall anchor can be reused depends on its material, type, and the method of removal. Plastic anchors, including expansion and self-drilling types, are generally designed for single use as they tend to break or deform upon removal. Metal anchors, such as toggle bolts, are more durable and may be reusable if they are not damaged during extraction. However, with toggle bolts, the toggle piece can fall into the wall cavity when the bolt is removed, making it difficult to retrieve. If an anchor is damaged during removal, for instance by having its head cut off, it cannot be reused regardless of the material.

Yes, it matters which side of drywall you use. One side is smooth, and the other is rough. The smooth side should be facing outward, toward the room, while the rough side should be hidden and facing the studs and framing of the house. The smooth side will be easier to apply tape, joint compound, and, later, paint to.

You can put drywall mud over paint to even out the surface or entirely resurface it. Sand the surface with 280-grit sandpaper, vacuum the debris and dust with a shop vac, and clean it with a slightly damp cloth. Allow the surface to dry. Apply drywall primer, especially if you’re skim-coating an entire wall. Apply the right type of drywall mud over the surface and smooth it with a trowel. Allow the layer to cure fully, then sand it before applying another layer or painting it.
