"Cody H. and Tracy D. Did an awesome job replacing my old cast iron bathtub with a new shower/bathtub! Couldnâ t be happier with the work and appreciated the time they took to review what was to be done and the walk through when it was completed."

"I was expecting a total renovation but with American Home Design we only changed the bathtub for a walk in shower. The rest of the renovation was left for us to contend with. For the high cost I thought we would have everything completed. I am happy with the shower and the lifetime warranty on it!"

"The acrylic products are excellent. The crews who actually did the work were excellent. The owner, Charlie Thornton, was the source of multiple problems.
If you are ONLY going to use this company to install acrylic around a tub, or convert a tub to a walk-in shower, then you are good to go. Anything more than that, and you are in trouble.
The original estimate was detailed and seemed fair. Charlie showed us pictures of finished bathrooms and they looked amazing. All of the tubs had acrylic skirts on them. Charlie assured us that bathroom #2 would have an acrylic skirt around the bathtub. We agreed that we would purchase the items we wanted installed, such as the vanity and bathroom fixtures. Charlie came by the house a couple of times with various crew members to check and recheck the bathrooms and to make sure he understood what we wanted. Bathroom #2 was challenging because it involved knocking down a wall to make the bathroom bigger. The game plan was to install a double vanity with a linen closet attached. We custom ordered the vanity and the linen closet. We felt like we made a good decision because Charlie seemed very detail-oriented. We put half down and waited for the work to begin.
Here is where it started to fall apart. Charlie told us it would take a week to renovate both bathrooms. It actually took a month. In the beginning, his crew worked for a day and then disappeared for a couple of days, and then came back. By week 2, they consistently worked on our projects.
Bathroom #1 went fairly well. The tub was removed and an awesome walk-in shower was installed. The work was done well. Bathroom #2 turned into a nightmare. Turns out, the wall we wanted to have removed was a load-bearing wall. How in the world does an experienced crew miss that??? The wall needed to remain, which completely changed how this bathroom was going to be renovated. The custom-ordered double vanity now had to be installed as 2 separate ones, with one on each side of the load-bearing wall. The issue with the load-bearing wall changed the labor that Charlie's crew was responsible for. They did not have to demo a wall. They no longer had to install a pocket door. They did have to cut an opening in an interior wall for the linen closet. Due to OUR change in plans for the bathroom floor finish, Dream Baths no longer had to install a floor and did not have to install a commode in bathroom #2. I asked for a revised estimate to reflect the changes in the work, and NEVER received it. I asked for it 3 times in writing and each time was ignored.
Charlie also had a habit of calling me or my husband in a panic, telling us that his crew was at a "stand still" because we did not yet have paint or some item that was needed. His calls always came at the worst possible time, during working hours. When we talked to the crew, however, we received a completely different story--that they were not yet ready for the paint or a light fixture, and that we were fine with getting the items on our schedule. Given that Charlie was rarely on site, we have no idea where he was coming up with this stuff.
When I received the call that the job was completed, I inspected the work and had some negative surprises. No acrylic skirt on the tub. Unfinished vanity in bathroom #2 because of missing pieces. This was not the fault of the crew, but no one had bothered to call us so that we could run by the supplier and obtain the missing pieces. I am finding this out  at 5 pm on a Friday afternoon, when the crew was standing around waiting for the check. The crew, by the way, had no idea what I was talking about regarding the acrylic skirt. Other problems: The vent in the bathroom #2 was never covered. Lights, mirror, and vanity were not aligned correctly in this bathroom. A can light was placed in the bathroom when the crew discovered that the bathroom door was hitting the existing light fixture--without speaking to us. That light is not illuminating the bathroom and was a poor choice. But now we are stuck with a hole in the ceiling.
We paid more than we should have given the quality and the quantity of the work., We will not be using this company in the future.

Bathtub Restoration questions, answered by experts

The cost of installing a new bathtub is considerably more expensive than refinishing an existing one, so if you’re looking to upgrade your tub on a budget, you might be better off refinishing it for now. Additionally, if your tub has only minor damage, refinishing it will make it look new again without the extra demolition and time.

Don’t let the following items sit in your sink, or you’ll end up with a stain:

  • Tea bags

  • Wet cloths

  • Sponges

  • Hair dye

The process of reglazing or refinishing a standard-sized bathtub typically takes between two to five hours. The duration can be longer if the tub has significant cracks or gouges that need repair or if it is an oversized or specialty tub. After the refinishing work is complete, the surface needs to set and cure for another 24 to 48 hours before it can be used. Proper ventilation is important for safety during this time. Once fully cured, a reglazed tub can last for 10 years or more.

Two alternatives to reglazing are installing a bathtub inlay or a bathtub liner. An inlay is a low-priced mat that adheres to the bottom of a bathtub or shower. It’s useful for sealing minor leaks and concealing damage on the bottom of a tub. On the other hand, a bathtub liner is essentially a protective casing that goes over the entire tub. They are usually custom-fit and cost more than reglazing yet don’t last as long.

Of the two most common and affordable bathtub materials, acrylic is notably better. Though fiberglass is cheaper, it is also more prone to scratching, chipping, fading, and cracking. Acrylic holds up better to wear and tear, cleaning, and sun exposure; the slight cost increase is usually worth the increased longevity.
