"We are completely satisfied with the lighting installation done by Mr. Electric! Steven Leavins was on time and courteous at our estimate appointment, and even contacted us timely when he had an unexpected opening for an earlier installation time. He was efficient and professional throughout. We'd love our new outdoor sconces! Thanks!"

"We had some concerns about the wiring and mounting of new fixtures, but both Al and Chris assured us there would be no problem. Both Joshua and Kourtny were on time and answered any questions we had concerns with, and from start to finish had things wired and installed with no problems at all. Great Job!"

"I am a big fan of DIY. As a result, we have had landscape lights from a big box store on our property. I had always believed that a professional lighting job would be way out of an acceptable price range for us. Ryan came out to do a demo and I was SOLD! Ryan did an excellant job from conception to fruition. He presented a lighting plan that was custom to our home as well as to our budget. The lighting and the fixtures are beautiful. There was consistant communication and follow up after the installation to ensure we were happy. We plan on having Ryan come out soon to do the back yard."

Lighting questions, answered by experts

Testing tools, such as Christmas light testers, non-contact proximity electrical testers, and multimeters, all simplify the process of testing Christmas lights. However, without one or more of those tools, testing Christmas lights the old-fashioned way only works sometimes. Without testing tools, the simplest testing method is visual inspection, which may or may not yield positive results.

The average cost to install outdoor or landscape lighting is around $4,000, with most projects ranging from $2,000 to $6,000. The total cost can vary widely depending on several factors, including the number of fixtures, design complexity, and the type and quality of the lights used, such as wall sconces, pathway lights, or lamp posts. Other factors that influence the price are the square footage of the area being lit, the amount of electrical work needed, any required excavation or trenching, and local permitting costs. For specific types, you might pay around $100 for pathway or string lighting and up to $700 for lamp post lighting.

While wet-rated and damp-rated lighting is designed to handle contact with moisture, there’s a difference between the two. Wet-rated lighting is safety-rated to be placed in areas with direct exposure to water, including your shower. Fixtures classed as wet-rated are made with waterproof seals to protect the filament and other electrical components from water and moisture.

Damp-rated fixtures can be used in places with some moisture contact, but not direct exposure. They don’t have the same waterproof seals used in wet-rated fixtures. Damp-rated lighting can be used on your bathroom ceiling or along a wall outside of your shower.

You can take a few steps to prolong the life of your holiday lights. Make sure to replace burnt-out bulbs as quickly as possible to avoid overloading the rest of the circuit and knocking out more lights. Before packing them up each year, plug each strand into the wall to confirm everything is still working. Wrap the lights carefully back into their original packaging or something similar—winding a strand tightly together or leaving it to hang loose in a storage bin can lead to frayed or damaged wiring.

If your lights are shorting out during rain storms or other winter events, you should probably replace them. These shorts indicate electrical issues that could cause serious hazards. Look for outdoor-rated lights with connectors made for rainy conditions to replace them. But if your Christmas lights are new and you want further protection, you can find weatherproof covers to add to the male-end connectors of your Christmas light strings. These can minimize the risk of shorts.
