No, you don’t need to use plumber’s putty to install a sink drain. Other options are available, such as silicone putty or silicone caulk. Plumber’s putty is the traditional method and it’s easier to work with and easier to remove. It doesn’t need to dry before using. Silicone putty should dry before you use the drain.

You may have to dig out drain valves if they are buried under dirt. This method isn’t ideal, and it increases the chance of clogs and damage. Ideally, a drip irrigation system buries drain valves in a gravel pocket so they are easier to access and better-protected. If you have trouble accessing drain valves, hire a sprinkler professional to find them safely and efficiently.

If you go to turn it counterclockwise and it won’t turn anymore, it’s open. Like most other valves, you should be able to turn a radiator valve counterclockwise (to the left) to open it and clockwise (right) to close it. To close a radiator valve, turn it clockwise until you meet some resistance and can’t turn anymore, but do so carefully to avoid breaking the valve.
