"5 Star Review but it should be 10 stars but it only goes to 5. Prompt, Courteous and Professional. Did not try to sell me on things but gave honest opinions and let me make the decisions. Job was 2 trees and a tree limb that fell on my neighbors fence. On the day of: they did all work as promised and in addition took down an additional tree that needed to be gone and cleaned up extra branches at no additional cost. It did start raining and sleeting in 36 degree weather but they stayed until the job was completed. They made sure that the equipment didn’t damage my yard even though it was very rainy. I am definitely using them again in 2026 for multiple projects. Do not bother with the other guys quotes, I’m telling you I went down that road. When you find a company that’s REAL stick with them. Trees N Chips Gadsen, Tn. Is the way to go."

Small jobs welcome

"Trees N Chips did an AMAZING job trimming 4 trees in my backyard. First, Mr. Darin came and gave me a quote. He was very professional, knowledgeable and took the time to give me several options for the trees. The price was very reasonable, and I had made an appointment. The day before the scheduled appointment, I received a message confirming he would be at my house in the morning to trim trees. Mr. Darin and his team arrived as scheduled and did a fantastic job. They went above and beyond cleaning up. It looks so GOOD...thank you! I recommend Trees N Chips and would do business with them again."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Completely topping a plum tree is a risky business. Cut too much, and you’ll kill your tree. That said, you do need to trim the top of your tree to encourage bushy growth, maintain your tree’s vase shape, and limit size.

A plum tree's central leader (or trunk) should never extend more than 3 feet above the highest branch. When you first plant your tree, cut the central leader so it’s 2 to 3 feet tall. As it grows, cut it back 12 to 20 inches until it reaches its desired height. Never prune more than one-third of the new growth.

The best time to cut down a tree is during its dormant season, typically in winter or early spring, after all the leaves have fallen. Removing a tree during this period is advantageous for several reasons. Frozen ground helps secure the tree stump, protects the surrounding landscape from damage, and reduces the risk of the tree falling in an unintended direction. With the leaves gone, there is less risk of the tree's foliage getting tangled with other trees. Additionally, since this is often a slower season for tree services, you may be able to hire a professional at a lower rate. This dormant period is also the best time for tree trimming.

A tree can split because of high winds, a change in temperature, or from an infestation or tree disease. All of these factors can overlap, making a single cause difficult to pinpoint. While winter storms are some of the most common causes for a tree to split, it can also happen because of termites or rot.

Most plum trees are pruned into a vase or open wine glass shape. They’ll have a shorter central leader (the trunk) that supports three to four main branches. Of course, this isn't always the case. If you have a European plum tree, you can grow it in a pyramid shape. Let the central leader extend the length of the tree and prune smaller branches to create the pyramid.

Yes, cutting a tree's roots can cause it to fall, particularly if major support roots are severed. In extreme cases, trimming roots can affect the tree's structure and stability. Many crucial roots are located just below the soil's surface. If you make severe cuts to roots more than 2 inches in diameter, you risk impacting the tree's water flow and its ability to withstand severe winds or storms. Even cutting roots less than half an inch in diameter under or outside the tree's canopy can cut off its water supply, causing it to decline, die, and eventually topple.
