"We had never had decent water pressure in our house, and our toilet had developed a leak that meant, combined with the lack of water pressure, that we had to cut off water to the toilet to use water anywhere in the house. Benjamin Franklin replaced our old, too-small house water line and replaced the old toilet completely as well as a few other smaller repairs. I was a little confused about the bill at first, but it was my own oversight. They did forget to attach the outside spigot back, but they came out and fixed it better than it was before at no cost. They also honored the Angie's List deal they had and actually helped me choose the best deal for the service I ended up using. Their representatives were all professional and courteous. It wasn't cheap, but I didn't expect it to be and our water is great now."

"Lucky did a quality job for us and his craftsmanship was apparent. He was professional and offered a reasonable price. We had discovered a broken flange when we started to install our toilet and felt like we needed a professional to handle it. Lucky installed a stainless steel adapter ring and fixed the problem. He also installed the toilet (which my husband was happy about). We were very satisfied and will call him again if we have plumbing or electrical tasks. He is very experienced. We were so glad to have found him!"

Toilets questions, answered by experts

Some of the most common bathroom leaks include showers, sinks, and toilets. Most homeowners discover these leaks because of the chronic dripping sound faucets and showers make as water drips to the ground, but a leaky toilet will often appear as a puddle. Inspect your bathroom faucets, showers, and toilets every month to detect leaks quickly.

Emergency plumbers charge a significantly higher rate than for standard service, typically 1.5 to 3 times the normal hourly cost. You can expect to pay between $100 and $500 per hour, with an average of around $200 per hour. In addition to the higher hourly rate, many plumbers charge a flat emergency service or trip fee, which can be between $150 and $300. The final cost depends on the timing of the call; prices are highest for major holidays, followed by weekends and after-hours service on weekdays. For a complex job on a major holiday, a master plumber's rate could reach as high as $600 per hour.

The biggest sign that your flange leaks is if you notice water at the base of the toilet. The cause is likely due to a poor flange installation, so you might have issues with loose bolts, an uneven flange, or a cracked plastic flange. Add a deteriorating wax seal to this, and you have a recipe for disaster. The best solution is to shut off the water valve, replace the toilet flange, and seal it with a new wax ring.

Sealant doesn’t need to be applied to the bolts, but it can be a good way to stop an active leak in the moment. However, don’t rely on it as a cure-all; instead, make sure to fix the problem at the source by changing or tightening the bolts.

If you do use sealant, make sure to spread it thickly and evenly across the bolts and the tank's porcelain.

To drain a broken toilet, place towels or plastic sheeting around the base in case of splashing or overflowing. Next, shut off the toilet’s water supply, usually via a valve on the wall behind the toilet. Begin flushing the handle to remove as much water as possible from the tank and the bowl. Don’t flush the toilet if it’s clogged, though. From there, use a large sponge to soak up any remaining water and wring it over a bucket.
