"I was in serious need of a top structural engineer to evaluate exterior remodeling on my home. Previously I hired someone representing themselves as a contractor to complete some comprehensive work on my home. The individual quit before the work was complete, leaving me figure out the rest. After finding out this person wasn't actually licensed in the first place, I desperately needed a structural engineer to assist me. The amount of work to review was substantial, and I had a very difficult time finding a structural engineer. After submitting a request on Angi, Neal from R4 Engineering reached out to me. From beginning to end, he was kind, professional, and thorough. He scheduled a meeting with me in a very reasonable timeframe. After coming to my home, discussing the work in depth, and taking lots of photos, a report was compiled. I needed a report that served multiple purposes. I needed data to address the fraudulent contractors work, a clear road map to provide a licensed contractor for correction of the remodeling, and plans to provide the county for permitting purposes. When I received the report from Neal, I was truly blown away at detail. Only someone who takes pride in their work could assemble a report like this. The amount of hours and effort that must have gone into this is rather remarkable. Neal and R4 will definitely be my go to for structural engineering from now on."

"I was really under the gun due to a prior Architectural firm not performing their duties per building plan codes. Not only were the plans incomplete but the City Plan Reviewer states(The Worst plans he’s ever seen) they will not make adjustments unless there is an additional charge for Thousands. Evaluation’s saved my clients and drew our project per code, along with Engineering in less time then they quoted. I highly recommended them, Especially Kirsten. You went above and beyond trying to coordinate this project. The staff was very professional and I will use them on all my projects. Sincerely, Frank B BCM Builders"

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

Yes, you can put a doorway in a structural wall; in fact, most exterior doors are set into structural walls. The project is a little more challenging than installing a door in a non-load-bearing wall because you need a structural engineer to assess the wall and make sure it’s safe to create a wall opening. Your engineer’s report will include instructions for your contractor on how and where to install additional supports, like steel headers above the door, to distribute the weight above to the wall on either side of the door.

On average, 6 inches of concrete can hold around 150 pounds per square foot, but the exact weight that 6 inches of concrete can hold depends on factors such as the type of concrete, the reinforcement method, soil conditions below, and structural design. If you’re concerned about the longevity of your concrete patio, walkway, or driveway, hire a professional to help you choose an appropriate concrete thickness and reinforcement method for your needs.

Their expertise in identifying potential problems early and implementing durable solutions safeguards your home’s integrity.
