"I could not have been more pleased with R&P Outdoor Solutions' price and performance! I am an elderly woman living on social security, and I had never imagined that I could afford to have the two dead trees in my yard cut down. I lived in fear every time bad weather surfaced, worrying about them crashing into my cabin. I received the recommendation from Angi's List, and placed the initial phone call to R&P Outdoor Solutions for an estimate at 4:00 p.m. on May 5th. By 6:00, they were at my cabin and gave me a ridiculously low estimate (these were two *big* black walnut trees). To keep the estimate low, I asked only to have the trees cut down, not removed from the property. Of course, I agreed to their price, and by 7:30 p.m., both trees were down with no damage to my property. Richard and Jeremy continued to work for another hour and a half, cutting those trees into more manageable sizes for my husband and I to deal with. I was blessed with this recommendation. Both cedar and redwood are some of the best woods for pergolas. Both are rot- and insect-resistant and have gorgeous natural tones that age well. Redwood tends to have a longer life span than cedar, but it also comes at a higher cost. While both options are durable, the best wood between these two for your pergola will primarily depend on your budget.

It’s best to opt for a lightweight roof, as a heavy roof adds a lot of weight and pressure to the support posts and hardware and destabilizes the structure. Vinyl is a good, lightweight option, as is a nice open trellis, louvered aluminum or vinyl slats, or fabric panels. Clear polycarbonate is another great option that offers seamless shelter and additional UV protection without completely obscuring the sunshine. You can also choose retractable coverings or an awning that you only use in wet weather or when you need additional shade.

There are a few differences between pergolas and gazebos. Both structures provide shade, but pergolas are more minimalistic, with four posts and a terraced roof. Gazebos usually have an elevated floor and are typically shaped like a polygon with six or eight open-air sides and two small sets of steps leading up to the platform. Gazebos also tend to have pointed, shingled roofs and ornate accents. If you want a structure that keeps out water on rainy days, a gazebo may be a better option—though you can purchase an awning to go over your pergola to keep out water.

If you have a knack for DIYing, a trellis can be built from scratch from all kinds of materials. However, if time is of the essence, it’s far easier to buy a trellis ready-made and put it together at home.
