With every roof installation or repair, we strive to live up to our motto: “Built with Quality, Integrity and Service.” Quality craftsmanship is crucial to a long-term roofing solution. Too often, we have been asked to replace a roof system that has failed prematurely because of poor craftsmanship and installation of low-quality materials by others. Roof systems with a life expectancy of 20 years that last only five years or fewer are not only frustrating to the customer but also a very expensive lesson in the importance of quality. Roofing materials only will perform to their specifications if they are properly installed. Call us today at 605-622-0272 to schedule a FREE Digital Assessment of your roof and the complete exterior of your home.

Siding questions, answered by experts

Vinyl siding lasts between 20 and 40 years, on average, but the timeline depends on the quality of the product you install, whether or not your siding professional installs the siding properly with room for expansion, the climate in your area, and more. With good maintenance on a high-quality siding in a moderate climate, you could get 50 years or more of life out of your vinyl siding.

Although dish soap will work to clean some of the grime off the aluminum siding, it may not kill mold and mildew as efficiently as a cleaning solution you can buy at a hardware store. If you have oily or greasy substances on the aluminum siding, rather than mold and mildew, dish soap should work extremely well.

While vinyl siding's lifespan of 20 to 40 years is impressive for the cost, other siding options can actually last much longer. Stucco siding can last 50 to 80 years when properly maintained and is only a bit more expensive than vinyl. Fiber cement is similar in that it’s a little more expensive but lasts more than twice as long. Stone and brick last the longest, often more than 100 years, but they’re the most expensive siding materials.

Composite siding is very resistant to warping that can affect some other sidings. Because of its composition, this siding doesn’t have the same risks of moisture damage that can cause rotting, buckling, and warping. Composite material doesn’t warp in high temperatures the way some kinds of vinyl siding can.

That said, composite siding is not entirely immune from moisture damage. It should still be properly installed so that moisture can properly drain from behind the siding, and protected by eaves and clean gutter so the siding doesn’t get repeatedly soaked by rain, which could lead to damage.

While any dark color of vinyl is likely to fade, dark red and dark brown vinyl tend to fade faster and more noticeably compared with other dark colors. White is the color least likely to fade, but it will show stains, mildew, and dirt more prominently than darker colors.
