"Because it involved the stairs going in and out of our house there was a safety issue. The project was finished within a week of my call which I greatly appreciated. I was informed of termites by the handyman who did the work. This was the root of the problem. He purchased "greenwood" which termites don't like."

Customers say: True professional

"I had an excellent experience with Neighborhood Handyman and couldn’t be more satisfied with the service. Jared mounted three televisions for me (75”, 58”, and 42”), and the entire process was seamless from start to finish. He was extremely professional, precise with his measurements, and worked efficiently without sacrificing quality. Everything was installed perfectly and looks amazing. On top of that, he was friendly, respectful, and made the whole experience stress-free. His pricing was very reasonable for the level of work and care he provided. It’s not easy to find someone who is both skilled and trustworthy, but Jared absolutely delivered on both. I highly recommend Neighborhood Handyman to anyone looking for reliable, high-quality service. I will definitely be using him again in the future! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️"

"Dunnâ s for it done!! Friendly, fast work, made adjustments to make it more cat proof for me, cleaned up after themselves, and super easy to work with. I get very anxious when strangers are at my home, but he and his crew were professional and I was comfortable having them work for me. Thanks!!"

"Robert did a fantastic job on our deck. He made sure that every thing was perfect. He staggered the boards on the floor of the deck and suggested that we use metal poles instead of wood for part of the railings. Over all he did a fantastic job and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM TO EVERYONE!!! Thank you so much Robert!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

When deciding whether to use nails or screws for framing, the specific needs of the project must be taken into account. Nails have long been the go-to option for framing due to their affordability, ease of installation, and ability to withstand shear forces. They are perfect for structural framing projects where fast assembly is essential. In contrast, screws offer exceptional holding power and are particularly useful in situations requiring increased strength and resistance to pull-out forces. For projects that prioritize accuracy and long-lasting quality, screws may be the preferred option, though nails remain a dependable and efficient choice.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

You can choose 5/8-inch plywood or 3/4-inch plywood—anything thinner than these sizes may not withstand the impact of debris propelled by strong winds or can be easily torn off by intruders. Remember that the durability of the wood board is crucial, particularly for safeguarding your windows during severe storms. The effectiveness of using wood boards for protecting the investment you made in your home relies on using the appropriate material and ensuring proper installation.
