We have 19 years of experience here at G&W Enterprises and we pride our company on reliability, great communication, integrity, and quality work. We look forward to earning your business!

"My first porch awning was completed in 2012, 35'x 14' with screened windows, door raised to the level of my home 3ft off the ground, and the second was completed in 2014, 18'x 8' with screen windows. Over the last two years, I have have had windows added, and have both roofs insulated and added my own gutter screens since I only needed 2" wide metal gutter screens from Lowes. Other than periodically checking every year, or two for leaks me and my family enjoy these spaces until the tempt hits below 40°. Plan on enjoying these spaces for many years to come. Walt and crew this is your Christmas card this year! I have referred them to other friends without problem. Adding windows was our big improvement. At the time I had the work done; Walt's prices beat Champion, Sunsetter, ad others. Based on what I have seen/heard that is still true. I am just a long-term satisfied customer. Take care/God Bless"

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can convert a fabric awning to a metal one. You just need to swap the fabric for metal panels, which are more durable and weather-resistant. However, the support frame will probably need reinforcement to handle the added weight. You should consult a pro to address any structural concerns.

If you're handy, it might be worth trying to install retractable awnings yourself. Just keep in mind that motorized retractable awnings require much more know-how, and the risk of something costly going wrong (such as damaging your new awnings) is higher.

Mechanical awnings should be easy to install for the average person with some handyman skills.

Awnings last five to 15 years on average. Vinyl awnings offer a long lifespan, but other fabric types can also last a long time if you regularly clean them and repair them as needed. To extend their lifespan, you should clean your awnings at least twice per year.

You can indeed open your awning in winter. It’s a misconception that you can only open retractable awnings in the warmer months. In fact, modern awnings are strong enough to offer a little respite from the snow if you’re someone who enjoys sipping hot cocoa outside on a beautiful winter day. But if a big storm is coming, such as a hurricane or a blizzard, it’s best to close your awning until the weather calms down.

To make sure the installation process goes smoothly, try asking your pro the following questions:

  • Do you have insurance and a professional license to do the job? Installing a metal or canvas awning into a home’s exterior can be tricky, so ask your pro if they have the correct licensing and insurance to do the work.

  • What was the price of similar jobs in the past? Awning installation costs will vary depending on size, design, location, and other factors. Ask this question to get a feel for the average price range for jobs similar to yours.

  • How long will this project take to complete? Installing an awning is typically not too time-consuming, but hurdles can always present themselves. Gathering an estimated timeline could give you some peace of mind.

  • Will I need to get a building permit? Your local contractor will be well-versed in rules and regulations regarding building permits and other requirements to bring a project up to code. A seasoned pro will be able to furnish this information when discussing the quote.

  • Do you have any references from previous clients? A competent pro should readily hand out contact information for previous clients. Email or call these clients to hear about their overall experience.
