I have exchanges several emails with Scott who said he would fix the problem but have yet to see anyone. He is now not returning calls or emails."

While many gate hinges are often made of extremely durable materials, such as galvanized steel, they can wear out after many years. What makes it so secure are the one-way screws that go through the door, the door frame or house wall, and into the home. Barrier doors or screen doors are ideal for bringing in summer breezes without letting in pesky flies and mosquitoes. But these types of doors aren’t as secure as a security door, which is installed with permanent screws into the home’s walls and often have deadbolts or other heavy-duty lock mechanisms for better security.

Fence gates sag because they have no support on the latch side of the gate to help hold them aloft. A gate wheel fixes that problem by providing support for that latch side. Remember that the ground must be level in front of the gate so the wheel can roll freely when you open and close it. If the terrain is uneven or slopes, a gate wheel won’t work.

Generally, the standard 10- to 12-inch-long and 1- to 1.5-inch-diameter gate springs will work. However, if you have an especially wide, thick, or heavy garden gate, you may need to opt for a longer, broader—and pricier—model to ensure secure closure and good longevity. These typically range between 12 and 16 inches long and are over 1.5 inches in diameter.
