Hi! I’m Eric, a master electrician in the trade since fresh out of high school ( 2003 ). I immediately jumped green into commercial electrical work 40 hours a week in 2003. As my knowledge grew, I’d start doing side jobs on the weekends ( ceiling fans, can lights, light fixture installs ) When I got my journeyman card in 2012, I started doing more advanced residential electrical on the side. ( Panel upgrades, troubleshooting, generator installs, boat lifts on docks, etc ) \nIn 2023, I realized I was losing money by working 40 hours a week for an electrical contractor when I had clients weeks and months out due to delayed availability. So I took my Masters Test, picked up General Liability Insurance, got bonded, and began my own small electric business. Here I am today. I can handle any massive, to small job dealing with anything electrical, and both a residential and commercial setting.

Holiday Decorating questions, answered by experts

When it comes to bang for your buck, LED lights are the clear winner for Christmas lights. While these will cost more upfront, they’ll last you for many holidays to come—far longer than your basic halogen bulbs. Along with that, they also save you big on energy costs throughout the season.

Good news, Christmas lovers: you can keep your lights up all year, provided you choose the type. It's critical that you choose holiday lights made for outdoor use, as these can withstand winter weather conditions. In addition, it's best to use LED lights instead of incandescent ones. LED bulbs can withstand temperature shifts and are energy efficient.

If you are considering leaving your holiday lights up year-round, ask your lighting installer about permanent installation. This project costs around $3,500 but gives you about six to 10 years of LED lights and adds a pleasing aesthetic to your home.

To hang Christmas lights outside without nails, consider using alternatives like adhesive hooks, gutter clips, or even hot glue. These options allow you to secure lights to various surfaces without causing damage to your roof or siding. Be sure to clean and prepare the surface before applying these alternatives for better adhesion.

The most likely cause of accidentally flashing lights is that a regular bulb has been replaced with a flash bulb by accident. If that’s not the case, you should look for a bulb on the strand that is not quite seated properly and will lose its connection when it’s touched or moved.

The simplest way to put Christmas lights on any metal surface is by using a magnetic hook or clip. You can also purchase magnetic lights, which should easily stick to any magnetic surface. Keep in mind that not all metals are magnetic. In that case, you’ll need to use a different clip.
