"I was highly impressed with Fresh Coat from beginning to end. The estimate was scheduled and performed right away, the proposal was highly professional, and the hardworking crew was punctual and did quality work. Jimmy followed up throughout and at the end of the project to make sure all of my expectations were met. However, my expectations were exceeded! I will use them again and will gladly refer them to my neighbors and friends."

"Mr. Barnhill was prompt and courteous.   It took some investigation for him to find the two separate problems.   But once he determined the problem he was able to fix them quickly, and even had a needed replacement part on his truck.  The charge for his time seemed very reasonable.

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

The average cost to professionally clean or pressure wash a deck is around $150, with prices typically ranging from $100 to $600. Several factors influence the final price, including the deck's size, material, condition, and how long it has been since its last cleaning. For a smaller deck of about 300 square feet, you might pay around $100. For a larger deck of 1,000 square feet or more, the cost could be closer to $300 to $400. Decks that are very dirty or haven't been cleaned in years may require more time and special detergents, which will increase the price. The deck's material also plays a role. Wood decks often cost more to clean because they require a gentle power washing technique to avoid damage. Composite decks are typically less expensive to clean, and cleaning a metal deck may cost around $100.

DIY staining or painting is manageable with proper preparation, including safety measures, necessary tools, and adherence to safe weather conditions for application.

Whether composite decking is better than wood depends on your priorities, especially regarding budget and maintenance. Composite decking offers superior longevity (30 to 50 years) and durability, and it is low-maintenance, requiring no sanding, staining, or sealing. In contrast, wood decks typically last 10 to 30 years and need refinishing every few years. While the upfront cost of composite is higher than wood, the reduced maintenance can lead to long-term savings. If a lower initial cost is the primary factor, wood is the more affordable choice.

Footings for ground-level decks need to be at least 12 inches deep, and some areas require them to be even deeper. A standard range for deck footings is anywhere from 12 to 48 inches. The minimum footing depth is determined by an area’s frost line and soil conditions. If you’re unsure how deep to install deck footings, check local building codes to find the minimum footing depth in your area.
