"First of all, I never write reviews, but Bob was great! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and did an amazing job. Power washing came out great and the house looks so clean now! I definitely recommend him if you need any power washing done. No need to hire a big name company and pay more money."

"I recently had my shingle roof replaced and I?m very happy with the results. The team was professional, punctual, and completed the job efficiently. The quality of the work is excellent, and the new roof looks great. They kept the work area clean and communicated well throughout the process. "I can't speak highly enough about this company. When I called to arrange an on site visit for an estimate, they showed up on time and listened to everything I had to say about the job. I was given a written quote on the spot (something I rarely see from contractors), so I offered them the job. To my surprise, he said he could get started the very next day (a Saturday) and that they would be able to finish the following Monday when the deck had dried off. They arrived to start the job when they said they would, and got to work right away. I was concerned I would need to move the stuff we have on the decks, but they told me they could simply move them to the side and then move them back when they were done. They did exactly that, and everything was put back to its original position when they were finished. They were power washing all day, and were very thorough. When they came back two days later, they again went to work right away rebuilding the stairs and water sealing the deck. The stairs look great! They even added a step so the bottom step could sit more securely on the concrete (it had been resting on a cinder block before being rebuilt). They advised to wait 1-2 days for the water sealer to dry before using the decks, we paid them, and they did a great job cleaning up when they left. I wish all contractors we hired were as efficient and straightforward as the people working at Melvin Power Wash. I will absolutely call on them again when my decks need maintenance, or if my house needs a wash."

  • Ocean Edge did a great job. They visited the home ahead of time and called with a quote. They arrived on the schedule date, proceeded to clean each window inside and out (and storm windows) and had everything completed in about 3 hours. The windows looked great.

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.

Hangers are one way of attaching stair stringers to a deck. These metal hangers are usually adjustable, allowing you to find the ideal angle for a secure installation. They’re the best choice for installing longer staircases, such as one on a two-story deck, to reduce the load on the deck frame while keeping the stairs stable.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

Building a deck isn't too hard if you’re handy with carpentry, have the necessary tools, and are willing to put effort into it. However, other factors, such as plans, permits, and design, can be hard if you don’t have experience in those areas.

Note: You’ll need another person to help you build the deck (especially for framing and setting the beams). Building a deck yourself will be very difficult if you don’t have an extra set of hands to help.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.
