Yes, you can opt to use one of these gutter system alternatives. The most traditional alternative is rain chains, which are literally heavy chains dangling from your roof’s edge to divert rainwater. A rain dispersal system may also come in handy as it breaks up the water on your roof. Most gutters already come with a dripedge to help direct water into gutters. However, we recommend installing a full gutter system to protect your home and use alternative methods as additional protection.

Oxidation is what causes copper to turn green. This oxidation is called a patina or verdigris, and in general, the process can take a few years. Your local temperature and humidity conditions play a big role, however; some gutters may not begin to turn green for 20 to 30 years if you keep them clean and maintained. Some homeowners prefer the penny-like sheen of copper. In some cases, you can prevent oxidation by regularly using a specialized anti-tarnishing finish.

Avoid trying to break the ice from the exterior using a hammer as this can cause cracks and damage to your downspout.

To avoid freezing the future, consider adding a heating cable to the exterior, which can adjust heat based on the surrounding temperature.
