"He seemed like an accurate and knowledgeable professional but the end result is awful. The railings are rusting and the metal is not straight in several places. I gave him several opportunities to fix it but I just keep getting excuses. I don't even want him on my property. I will have to rip it out and start over once I save enough again."

Yes, you can convert manual gates to electric operation. Installing a motor and an opening device from a kit allows you to convert any gate so it can open and close automatically. Be sure to buy the correct type of opener for your gate style. For example, some openers are specific to swinging gates, while others are for sliding gates. Get familiar with your swinging or sliding gate parts before you go shopping to avoid having to return to the store for the correct opener.

Ideally, your gate would swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it's generally best for the gate to swing inward. There are exceptions, however. For example, if your property is on a slope, your gate may not be able to swing in.

Keep in mind that there may be local building codes that require your gate to swing inward.

There are a few possible issues that are causing your gate to sage. The hinges may be bent, or the screws holding the hinges to the post could fail—causing the gate to sag from one side to the other. The gate itself may also have come out of square due to failing supports, causing it to sag. On the other hand, it’s possible the gate isn’t the issue at all. The post holding the gate aloft may lean inward, causing the gate to sag.

Space the center gap at half an inch instead of the usual three-eighths of an inch for a single gate.
