"The project went very well. They are great guys and very courteous and professional. They did a great job in the preparation for the project and completed it within the day. They cleaned everything up after they were finished. They have great attention to details and make sure everything was done to perfection and to my satisfaction. Very pleased with the completion of the job."

"James possesses a knack for design as well as keen attention to detail. His pricing is competitive and often below what comparable services offer. I was well-pleased with his work. It turned out beautiful! In addition, he did a backsplash with arabesque style tile, put up a stove hood, installed a shiplap wall and redid framing around windows and doors, plus additional framing."

"Overall, very satisfied with the job. They installed new screening in our patio door. The work was completed a week before the original estimate, the price was fair, and the workmanship was great. However, it would be nice if the company would take an extra few minutes and clean the door frame. Apparently that service isn't included in the price, but most people would probably pay a few dollars extra to have the frame wiped down so they could just re-install the door. As a business owner myself, I wouldn't (and don't) turn a completed project over to the customer that he or she would then have to do additional work on. But this issue wouldn't prevent me from recommending the company."

"Jim and Jeremy did a fabulous job. They completed scraped the whole roof then put on a primer coat and then the finished coat. This is the best I ever remember the roof looking andI have lived here for 74 years. I highly recommend them for any work. They do a great job, they do not waste time and they make sure you are satisfied. I can not say enough good things about them. Well the best thing I can say is that they made my wife happy."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

One of the most common house framing basics for decades has been using wood for the framing work. However, some framing contractors now suggest using steel frames. Steel is lightweight, resistant to fire, and resistant to moisture, all of which are areas where wood framing could cause problems. However, steel framing is more expensive than wood and limits your ability to insulate the home.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
