"Johnston General Contracting did very fine work on power washing and sealing my deck. The deck looks great. While he was late on the first day of the job the second day he was right on time. I would recommend this company. The only negative would be that the price seemed on the expensive side."

"Out of the Ordinary Construction is a father and son team, they built a deck at the rear of my home after removing some dilapidated steps. They did an outstanding job, I was impressed on their work ethics and dedication to completing the project. They arrived early in the morning and worked until late evening; their professionalism was astonishing and amazing!! My new deck is gorgeous and I am a very happy customer, I will use this company again on a future project and I highly recommend them for anyone needing a project done. "They were great. Very communicative on arrival time, with quotes, with invoicing, and did all services exactly as they said they would and as good as we hoped. They were conscientious in their work, not finishing until it was exactly right...in fact they came back again to touch up some of the deck knowing they needed a certain spot to dry longer. Overall great guys and I'm looking forward to bringing them in again for the next project."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

A wood deck requires annual cleaning and regular inspections for loose or broken boards, nails, and screws. It should be refinished by applying a stain or sealer every two to three years to protect the wood from water damage, rot, mildew, and sun fading. The exact frequency can depend on the climate and the deck's exposure to sun and moisture. If your deck is painted, it will need repainting approximately every 10 years. Signs that your deck needs refinishing include faded, splintering, or warping boards.

When building a deck, #2 grade lumber is a go-to for several reasons. It’s strong, budget-friendly, and works well for most framing and decking needs. But upgrading to #1 or Appearance Grade can give your deck that extra visual edge if you're after a cleaner, more polished look for high-visibility spots.

When installing deck boards, screws are generally a better option than nails. Screws offer superior holding strength over time, keeping the boards securely in place. In contrast, nails are more likely to pop out, which can create a tripping hazard. While you can use either, we recommend using 3-inch galvanized deck screws. To minimize the risk of cracking the wood, it's a good practice to drill small pilot holes before driving the screws into the deck joists.
