Specializing in high end residential and commercial design, we offer a wide variety of options to suit your needs.

"We hired Basic Concept Interiors to renovate the attic room in our 100 year old home. We worked Karen to turn our dream into a reality, with her talented team of professionals helping to shape the space and exceed our expectations. Basic Concept Interiors was quick to respond and made the design process easy. The project was very involved: complete room demo, roof work, extensive structural and framing modifications, electrical work, windows, insulation, wallboard, and finishing. The team worked hard to complete the project quickly and on budget. I had changes in vision throughout the project, as many homeowners often do, and all were accommodated completely and with great quality. I highly recommend working with Karen and Basic Concept Interiors for your home renovations projects! - J (before/after pictures forthcoming!)"

Architectural and Interior Design

"I can't say enough about Chad and his company. From day one I felt confident that Chad was the person who as going to design our dream house. My wife and I purchased a house and basically demolished the majority of the inside. Chad and Liz were instrumental in designing the new layout inside but also redesigned some of the outside of the house. We have been living in our new house for 2 months now and couldn't be happier with the decisions we made. I think what stood out about Chad was the fact that he genuinely cares about his clients and isn't afraid to question the contractor on even the smallest of details. Chad is definitely a detail oriented person and that is exactly what we wanted and needed for our project. He was also looking out for us from a cost effectiveness standpoint. I know he saved us thousands of dollars with some of the recommendations he made. Chad was also an excellent communicator. He was accessible by phone, text or email which was important to us because we are the type of people who like to get answers in a reasonable amount of time. He was also willing to schedule meetings around our work schedules so there were several times that we met at 7am to walk through the house or look at the plans. I would also like to comment on his assistant Liz who was instrumental in drawing the plans and assisting with the layout and design also. She always showed up with a smile on her face and really made the process as stress free as you could with the size of our project. We were really happy with her recommendations and once again wouldn't change a thing. I would highly recommend using Wildman Chalmers Design for any project big or small and if anyone ever has questions about their services please email me at [email protected]. Add photos"

FAQs for interior design and decorating projects in Pittsburgh, PA

Most interior designers have at least a four-year degree, if not an advanced degree in interior design. Additionally, many states require interior designers to be licensed. If your state does not require licensing, interior designers can take a licensing exam with the National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Overall, licensing requirements vary from state to state, but most licenses require certain education levels and experience to qualify. To check the qualifications of your interior designer, use Angi’s state licensing tool.

The difference between an interior designer and an interior decorator is that the interior decorator focuses on the space’s colors, furniture, art, and finishes. An interior designer goes beyond that to plan and execute layouts, structural changes, and overall functionality in addition to aesthetics that the decorator manages. We recommend hiring an interior designer for major remodeling projects and hiring an interior decorator to establish or enhance your home’s interior style.

On average, hiring an interior designer costs about $8,200, ranging from $200 to $65,000, depending on where you live, the size of your home, and the type of decor. The total price tag of interior design services is based on whether they provide consultation and implementation as well as any specialty design services, such as home staging or digital design mock-ups. Residential interior designers typically charge an hourly rate of $50 to $200 per hour, or up to $500 per hour in areas with high demand.

Hiring an interior designer is often worth the investment, especially for larger projects beyond DIY interior design and project management skills. However, the decision to hire an interior designer depends on your budget and the size of the project. Some benefits of hiring an interior designer include:

  • Realizing the best layout and decor for optimal functionality of the space for your taste, budget, and lifestyle

  • Managing your project to keep the job on track and within budget

  • Assistance with home staging ahead of home sale

  • Serving as a point of contact for contractors

  • Accessing discounts from local suppliers

Before hiring an interior designer, ask a few questions to better understand how they work, what’s expected of you, and what they promise to deliver.

  • How long will the project take to complete?

  • What type of services do you offer?

  • Can you provide a project estimate?

  • Do you work with subcontractors?

  • Are you licensed or certified in this state?

  • Do you have a portfolio of previous work I can review?

  • May I contact your customer references?

  • How do you handle change orders?

  • How do you handle payment?
