"Jamie was very responsive in returning calls and showing up when he said he would. He came by as scheduled to survey the trees in question and to provide a written estimate. His quote was substantially lower than another tree service from which we had gotten an estimate. On the appointed day, Jamie and his crew of two arrived promptly first thing in the morning. They took care to put wooden slabs under the truck's stabilizer jacks to minimize the impression that would be left on my lawn. While one worker made quick work of the fallen tree, another began to cut the standing dead tree from the truck's bucket, working from the top down. They then carefully felled the last segment of the trunk and put all the cut up logs into their truck. All remaining scraps were raked up to my satisfaction. All three men worked diligently throughout the job. There was occasional good-natured ribbing between them, but no loafing around whatsoever; as other reviewers have commented, these guys aren't afraid of work. They got down to the job and were done in under an hour and a half. I would not hesitate to use Conklin Tree Service again.

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

You’ll want to have your palm trees trimmed during the spring, ideally in May, before hurricane season sets in, which generally takes place during the late summer. Palm trees grow fastest over the summer months. You’ll also want to trim your palm trees when you notice:

  • Brown fronds

  • Dry leaves

  • Flower pods

  • Fruit

  • Fronds overgrown in power lines

  • Frond encroaching upon your neighbor’s home or yard

  • Visible damage from a storm

After a big storm, you may not be sure if a tree was struck or not. Look for the telltale long scars, like strips or gouges in the bark of the tree, running in sometimes jagged lines down the length of the trunk. These scars will often show vulnerable living wood inside the tree. It’s also common to see scorched or wilted leaves on the side or top of the tree where lightning struck.

In most cases, you should not use a pruning seal on trees after trimming. Applying a sealant can interfere with the tree's natural healing process, and it does not guarantee protection from pathogens. Instead of sealing the cut, the best practice is to support the tree's natural recovery by providing it with plenty of water and a dormant-style fertilizer. However, there are exceptions. Pruning seals may be recommended for very vulnerable species, like elm trees, in areas where dangerous diseases such as Dutch elm disease are prevalent. In these specific situations, the protection offered by a sealant can outweigh its downsides. For advice tailored to your situation, especially after cutting large branches, it is best to consult a local tree trimming professional.

You can use a felling ax to chop down a tree by following the same prep and steps as a chainsaw, but be prepared to use some muscle. For trees bigger than 7 inches in diameter, it can take some time and serious strength to cut down a tree using just an ax.

While the fastest way to kill a tree is to simply cut it down, there are several other methods to choose from. You should hire a professional tree removal service to cut down a tree to ensure your personal and property safety. Some slower but effective options include treating or grinding the tree stump or using a basal bark treatment.
