"I contacted JA drywall to work on some popcorn ceilings for me. Josh was very responsive and arrived on time to give me an estimate. To his credit, he did inform me that his estimate would probably be higher than other estimates I would receive. I decided to go with Josh because I felt he was honest, how he communicated with me and because he was available via telephone. Unlike other drywall contractors, who did not show up or were very flaky with the communication. Josh started the work on time and finished when he said he would be complete. Josh did a great job with my ceilings. The drywall was installed, taped, and sanded. I was very impressed with the work they did and I would absolutely hire him again. If you’re looking for drywall to be completed, Contact Josh and then call other companies and you’ll see the difference in communication. A+ in my book."

"My husband and I could not be more pleased with the outstanding and polite service we received. We wanted to remodel our master bedroom that looked awful, we needed wall paper removal in the master bathroom and also drywall repair on the ceiling. They took care of everything for us they did wonders to our master bed and bathroom. Above all they were very polite and professional. The owner was very communicative and made sure to explain to us every step of the process. Their work exceeded our expectations and their price was very reasonable. I would not hesitate to use them again in the future."

"It went great. It was easy to schedule time for Larry to take a look. He came very quickly, emailed a quote with our options for repair. I really like that Larry provided a written quote with the options explained. Also happy he uses email to communicate so we can avoid the whole "phone tag" issue I've had with many other contractors. On the scheduled day, he and his partner arrived very promptly and got right to work. He cut out the damaged part of the ceiling and patched in a new part. The work looks GREAT! I couldn't have asked for a better job done. Thanks guys!"

"Nilton did an excellent job repairing the water damaged master bathroom ceiling and door trim.  He replaced/repaired the loose and crumbled taping, joint compound and paint.  Dryed the repaired area in between compound coats.  Then he sanded and prepped the ceiling and door trim for painting and then painted ceiling, door and trim.  He vacuumed up all the joint compound dust and scrapped paint in the bathroom and surrounding bedroom.  Very neat and very clean.

"I had a great experience with Mastertech.  I reached out via Angie's List because I had a concern that there we had mold growing in our bedroom ceiling from a roof leak that occurred several years ago courtesy of Hurricane Irene.  We weren't sure that the moisture had been dealt with properly at the time, so we wanted a professional to check it out.  I sent the message late Wednesday night.  When I woke up Thursday morning, I had a response waiting for me to give Lenny a call.  I gave him a call and he we were able to schedule an estimate for noon the same day.  He was running a little bit late, but was very professional, calling me to let me know his updated ETA and making sure that the timing would still work for me.  When he arrived, he put on booties before coming into the home and was very personable and knowledgeable.  He took the time to hear my concerns and really educate me on the potential issues.  I was fully prepared to have to pay to have that portion of our ceiling removed to have any potential problem remediated, but he was honest and forthright by letting me know that he really didn't think that we had a mold problem and that it would likely be a waste of money (approximately $1200-1400) to have this completed.  This was much appreciated.  To obtain peace of mind and also documentation that the testing was performed as we would be having tenants in our home shortly, we agreed that he would perform the testing to confirm that there was no issue.  He was able to perform the testing on the spot, and I received the results on Sunday morning.  As Lenny suspected, the test came back negative, which was a relief for us of course.
Overall, I was extremely happy with this service.  The turnaround time was great from initial contact to resolution.  I felt that I could trust their expert advice without feeling like they were just trying to make a sale.  I would absolutely use them again (although I hope I never have to).

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity for several reasons, though opinions on them can vary. The primary drawbacks include an outdated appearance, difficulty with cleaning and maintenance, and potential health risks, as ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos. As design trends have shifted toward sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now prefer smooth ceilings for their clean look and easier upkeep. However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as excellent acoustic properties for noise reduction and the ability to hide imperfections. Some also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective solution. Ultimately, whether they are "bad" depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and aesthetic goals.

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

Knockdown hides imperfections better than orange peel due to its thicker, more varied pattern. The valleys and peaks make flaws less visible under lighting. However, note that knockdown walls will collect more dust and dirt, so be prepared to wipe them away more frequently than you would with orange peel.

Popcorn ceilings have fallen out of popularity due to their outdated appearance, difficult maintenance, and potential health risks. Ceilings installed before the 1990s may contain asbestos, which poses a serious health hazard if disturbed. As design trends have shifted towards sleeker, more modern finishes, many homeowners now favor smoother ceilings that offer a cleaner look and easier upkeep.

However, popcorn ceilings do offer some benefits, such as acoustic dampening and the ability to hide imperfections. Some people also appreciate their retro charm or find them to be a cost-effective option. Ultimately, whether a popcorn ceiling is 'bad' depends on personal preference, safety concerns, and the overall aesthetic of the home.

In most cases, it is worth removing popcorn ceilings because they are considered outdated and can make a home more difficult to sell. Buyers typically prefer a smooth, modern finish, so removing the texture can increase a home's value and appeal. The necessity can sometimes depend on the housing market; in a competitive market, buyers may be more willing to overlook minor renovations. The most critical factor is the potential presence of asbestos, which is common in older popcorn ceilings and poses a significant health hazard if the material deteriorates. If you know your ceiling contains asbestos, you are required to disclose this when selling, which can be a major deterrent for buyers. In this situation, it is highly recommended to have a professional remove or encapsulate the ceiling to resolve the issue before it impacts the sale.
