"A+++! Mason initially beautifully repaired a cracked and water damaged ceiling for us before we put our house up for sale. Fortunately, we then had immediate buyers and the sale progressed quickly, but of course we had a few things to have repaired in order to get a clear CO and to accommodate inspection repair requests. This included some electrical work, stair repair, roof repair, support beam repair, wood rot repair, among a few other items. I appreciated being able to count on Mason for a quick response and fitting our repair into his schedule quickly so we could meet our tight deadlines to inspectors and buyers. His prices were reasonable and his work was clean and of high quality. He was responsive and very nice - truly great to work with. Some people don’t like the look of gas fireplaces since they don’t offer the classic charm or appeal of a wood-burning fire. Plus, gas fireplace installation is more expensive than other types of fireplace installations due to the added complexity of working with gas lines. There’s also a chance that gas could get into your home, which is a major health and safety risk.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

If you haven’t had your chimney cleaned in some time, soot and grime can build up, making it difficult for the lever to release to close the flue. When this happens, locate the lever and clean it thoroughly. If this doesn’t help, consult with a fireplace repair pro to examine it for you.

When your fireplace is not in use for longer periods of time, such as over the summer, you can keep smells at bay by spraying either a commercial fireplace deodorizing product or a blend of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water around the walls of the fireplace. 

Or, you can place a container of charcoal inside the fireplace to absorb odors. Just be sure to remove it before it’s time to start using the fireplace again.

Your fireplace flue is open when the chimney is unsealed and open to the outside air and sky. That’s why one of the best ways to figure out if your flue is open is to visually check for daylight inside of your chimney—or to feel for a draft, which may be generated by the difference in temperatures inside and outside of your home.
