There are times when you should remove all exterior paint before repainting. This includes when you need to get rid of lead-based paint (which should be done by a pro), or if you need to apply a different finish than what’s already there. If you have leftover white paint from another project, whitewashing can be a great way to use up paint that might have otherwise gone to waste. 

The number of coats you need to apply when whitewashing a surface depends on how opaque you want the final product to be. If you're going for a transparent, barely there look, a single coat or two may suffice. For fuller coverage, you'll want to use multiple coats. Another option is to use a less diluted paint to get a thicker coverage. 

The two most common paint types are latex-based paint and oil-based paint. Here are some of the most significant differences between the two:

Latex-based paint:
