Small jobs welcome

"Last week, I hired Jason Excavating again for a driveway job to install the catch basin in front of my house. He did an excellent job. He's extremely responsible, very knowledgeable about his work, and an excellent person. I will always recommend him. He goes the extra mile in his work. I'm always grateful."

"This is a great company to work with. Made an appointment and he showed up on time. Originally we requested quote for tree trimming. In talking with him, we mentioned that we have excavation work to be done. He began with removing a huge pile of cut tree limbs and cuttings that have accumulated over the years. He cleared a large area and did a great job. We even had some old x-mas trees in that pile over our hill. He is returning to trim our tree that is huge. Very understanding and there was great communication throughout. I would recommend this company for a great job. Very considerate of your needs and an overall great guy."

"C and H Lawn Care came to my home the same day I posted an inquiry with Home Advisor. Mr. Mills is very professional and quoted all the work I requested. I asked for a written quote and a copy of his insurance policy and upon his arrival to perform the work he showed me the contract and gave me a copy of his insurance policy. I told Mr. Mills that when the weather warms up I want him to come back to spread mulch and do some other work. Since our first experience with C and H Excavation, we have had Mr. Mills back to spread mulch in all of our beds around our home. He has also performed spring and fall cleanup for us at a very favorable rate. He is very conscientious and wants his clients to be 100% satisfied."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Call 811 to locate and mark the gas lines at least three days before digging. In many areas, you can dig within 18 inches of the lines, though in some locations, the distance may be further. Check local regulations, as you may need a utility company representative onsite when digging. Document your calls to 811 and precautions taken to avoid gas lines. A homeowner can be held liable for hitting a gas line in some cases, but contacting the proper authorities and following all guidelines can offer protection.

Yes, most services include site leveling and foundation work. Confirm with your contractor for specifics.

Excavation and grading are both generally necessary for designing your foundation, and leveling the ground where your foundation will go. These steps can also prepare the area by removing vegetation and anything else that could interfere with your home’s foundation.

Excavation is priced in cubic yards, so you’ll need to find the volume of the area in order to calculate costs. Multiply the length, width, and proposed depth of your excavation site, then convert it into yards to get the volume. Multiply this figure by the price per cubic yard.

Most homeowners can measure by hand to get a rough estimate, even if it’s tedious. You may want to pull out a tape measure or use a string to help mark the area.
