"EXCELLENT! I would and I plan on hiring him again. The front deck was falling to disrepair and the stairs were steep and dangerous. We never had a walkway put in so there was quite a bit of work to be completed. All the work was completed in an excellent, professional manner, with new stairs relocated leading to the driveway. He added a walkway and cleaned up all our overgrown vegetation. The deck was sanded back to original wood, deck sealer and painted beautifully. We had him build a wooden gate to match the deck design. Five stars ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️"

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.

Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.
