You should always seal cut countertops to prevent damage and to keep them looking their best. The right way to seal countertops depends on the type of material. Formica can't handle high heat, so never place anything fresh from the oven or off the stovetop on a laminate surface because it will scorch.

Laminate countertops can last 10 to 15 years, depending on how well you maintain them. Because they’re cheap, laminate countertops can’t handle too much and are prone to scorching and scratches. Daily maintenance with a soft cleaner and regular sealing can extend their lifespan

Extensive chips and cracks may require a full replacement of the countertop. The cost to install a new countertop is around $3,100 on average.
