"Overpriced and not a very good job.. I paid $70 for this particular simple mow. Seem like nice guys, over the phone though.."

"The Odd Job Tree Specialists were responsive, respectful, quickly got us scheduled and priced fairly. Initially contacted them for an apple tree that had overgrown but also had them trim branches of a larger tree that was close to the house. Climbing skills are impressive and they even hauled away what had been cut. We will definitely be calling them again soon to tackle dropping some dead trees. If you need tree work, you should give them a try."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Rather than using a common two-by-four piece of wood for a rafter, you probably will use two-by-six, two-by-eight, two-by-ten, or even two-by-twelve boards. Wider lumber is typically a better choice in a larger building as it provides more sturdiness. Some installers may use wider lumber for rafters near the edges of the roof, where the greatest stress occurs, and save money with narrower lumber toward the middle.

Clean regularly, treat wood for weather resistance, and inspect for damage to ensure longevity.

Pergolas and similar overhead outdoor structures will typically be subject to building code regulations. Every municipality is different, and some may have specs or permit requirements, so it’s important to double-check. Some HOAs may also have restrictions on what you can build, so be sure to check with your HOA as well (if applicable).

Pressure-treated wood is a classic and budget-friendly choice for building a pergola. If you’re going for a more natural look, opt for hardwoods such as redwood and cedar. These naturally resist insects and rot, plus they have stunning color and texture on their own, so you’ll be able to skip stains and paints.

It’s best to opt for a lightweight roof, as a heavy roof adds a lot of weight and pressure to the support posts and hardware and destabilizes the structure. Vinyl is a good, lightweight option, as is a nice open trellis, louvered aluminum or vinyl slats, or fabric panels. Clear polycarbonate is another great option that offers seamless shelter and additional UV protection without completely obscuring the sunshine. You can also choose retractable coverings or an awning that you only use in wet weather or when you need additional shade.
