"My solar panels from Pennsylvania Solar have now been on my roof for more than two years and it’s been a very positive experience. They kept me informed on the schedule for my work and got it done within the timeline promised. They handled all the permitting, inspections, and coordinated the final connections with Duquesne Light – I didn’t have to worry about any of it. The install went pretty much as expected. Most of the work was completed in one day with a few minor follow-up items the next day. It took another couple of weeks for the electric utility to complete their part. The only installation surprise had to do with vent pipe from my kitchen sink that was cut down and rerouted under the panels. What they did worked fine – I just wasn’t aware they were going to do it. But they were able to locate all the panels on the back side of my roof (which is south-west facing), so the whole install is almost invisible from the street. In almost two years of use, the system has required no maintenance. In the first full year of use, I spent about 90% less on electricity compared to the last full year before the install. In the second year, I improved my home’s insulation and ended the year with $25 more in solar credits than what I spend on electricity. And that’s with added electric consumption from working at home full time. The only days I don’t get any production are winter days when they are covered by snow. Usually, the snow slides off within a few hours to a day or two. Just beware down below when that wet, heavy snow starts to slide! I’m considering switching some of my gas appliances to electric. If I eventually decide to add more panels or battery storage, I would certainly consider PA Solar first."

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts

Solar panels should get at least four to six hours of direct sunlight daily. It’s even better if sunlight reaches panels between the peak hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is enough to power a home, depending on your solar system’s size and energy needs. Remember that panels will generate some power under cloudy skies or in the shade, and many systems compensate for lower sun exposure by drawing energy from the grid or battery storage.

It’s possible to install solar on a tar and gravel roof, but it’s far from the best roofing material for solar. Solar installations require roof penetrations, and although your solar installer will seal the holes, they still increase the risk of roof leaks. Flat roofs are already more likely to leak than sloped roofs, and adding solar will only make leaks more likely.

There are a few great questions to ask a solar contractor or inspector when you speak to them. You’ll probably want to find out about the energy yield and efficiency of your array, ensuring the actual output matches the amount you calculated when installing the array in the first place. It’s also a good idea to find out about any damage or wear and tear on the array and to inquire about how soon you need to make repairs or replacements to essential components.

Yes, you have to get on the roof to cut a hole for solar tubing. It's not possible to complete the job from inside your house by simply cutting through the ceiling. So if you want to go the DIY route, remember to use safe ladder practices. If you’re not comfortable climbing on your roof to install solar tubes, hire a pro who has the tools and expertise to do the job safely.

Rooftop solar panels supply energy to a single household, where a solar farm can power multiple homes at once with clean energy. Residential rooftop solar panels cost more per watt with a lower project total, and those panels only service the residence they are installed on (in most circumstances). With a solar farm, multiple households can buy into the project and share the overall cost.
