In most cases, paint primer is necessary before painting over wood paneling. A hardy primer formula covers up stains and leaves a grippy surface for the new paint to hold onto. There are two primer choices: oil-based or latex-based. Choose an oil-based primer for durability and adhesion, but prepare for extra dry time and more VOC (volatile organic compounds) fumes. Or, pick a stain-blocking latex primer. They’re easy to apply, clean up, and affordable.

Yes, a mist coat can be too thick. If you don’t dilute the mist coat enough and you apply a thick coat to the wall, the plaster won’t be able to evenly absorb the coat. This can cause the later coats of paint to not adhere to the mist coat or plaster, leaving behind flaking, peeling, or bubbling paint. Even if it doesn’t flake or peel right away, a thick primary layer of mist coat can also cause the final paint job to look uneven.

Whether you use a brush or roller depends on the size, shape, and amount of tiles. Rollers are easier to maneuver over large areas and can apply a more even coat of paint in a shorter time frame with no visible brushstrokes. Brushes are best for precision work, particularly in very small areas. If you don't want visible brushstrokes on your painted tiles, you can paint details with small foam brushes instead of bristled paint brushes.

Depending on your lighting and design style, some finishes will enhance certain colors to your liking more than others. For example, high-gloss finishes can intensify deeper shades such as navy blue and emerald green, making them feel luxurious and bold. On the other hand, you may appreciate how soft pastels and neutrals have a more calming, smooth feel in matte or eggshell finishes.

Use flat paint in the rooms that don’t need a lot of cleaning. Flat paint works well in bedrooms, where there is low human traffic, and having the walls soak up light keeps the look and vibe calm. Flat paint also hides imperfections, so if you spot a crack, dent, or patch in your wall, choose flat paint over something shinier.
