"I wish that I could share the before pictures of my large, two level, slate and concrete patio and then show the after picture when Spray Away proved themselves worthy of MY 5/5, 100% satisfaction. These true professionals are just that, prepared, they work safe, they are supervised, and they do not pull any punches. Michelle truly has an eye for detail, and a hustle that does not quit. I am hard to impress, but I am impressed. Spray away is worth it, and they went above and beyond from what I had expected from previous exterior powerwashing companies. I d hire them back in a second, and I probably will after seeing the patio, and since I am selling, what curbside appeal a freshly cleaned red brick walkway without slippery moss, (things tracked into the home) in addition to the original contrast of the original white on beautiful red brick. My only query is to Home Advisor...this company has been rated 5/5 by all reviews given. Shouldn t that make Spray Away a 5/5, 100% on the site? It s somewhat misleading, since they have nothing but perfect scores across the board. Please advise. Thank you to Spray Away!!"

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

It is recommended to clean your deck once or twice a year to prevent the accumulation of dirt, debris, mold, and mildew. The ideal times for cleaning are in the spring and fall. A spring cleaning removes grime that has built up over the winter, preparing your deck for summer use. A fall cleaning washes away messes from summer activities, preventing them from setting into the wood over the winter. The exact frequency can depend on factors such as how often the deck is used, its exposure to pollen, and whether salt was used on it during the winter. Regular cleaning helps protect the wood and its finish from damage.

When sourced responsibly, the most sustainable wood decking options are timber trees like redwood, pine, Douglas fir, Nootka cypress, and Western red cedar. These tree species are fast-growing with low carbon emissions. Plus, most timber woods make durable deck materials because of their resistance to rot and decay over time.

Yes. Composite decking is resistant to moisture and freezing temperatures, so it’s an ideal material to use in particularly cold or damp seasons. You can install this type of decking throughout the year since it does not warp or split in the cold.

Whether composite decking is better than wood depends on your priorities, especially regarding budget and maintenance. Composite decking offers superior longevity (30 to 50 years) and durability, and it is low-maintenance, requiring no sanding, staining, or sealing. In contrast, wood decks typically last 10 to 30 years and need refinishing every few years. While the upfront cost of composite is higher than wood, the reduced maintenance can lead to long-term savings. If a lower initial cost is the primary factor, wood is the more affordable choice.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.
