"Patrick is a skilled carpenter and all-around handyman. He worked for 5 days at our home and was always courteous, very thorough and professional. Patrick let me know the price ahead of time, what time he would be at my home & he was always punctual. He also took extra precautions in the work space to keep it and the rest of the house clean! Indoors, Patrick removed no longer needed 2x4 framing from our basement and garage left by a previous owner. He prepped the living and dining rooms for sheet rocking and fitted all first floor exterior walls with reflective insulation. Outdoors, Patrick did an excellent job cutting down numerous dead trees from our backyard and repairing the fence. I was extremely pleased with Patrick's work and have given his name & phone number to a few friends. I will gladly hire him again."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Rotting wood, loose railings, or unstable stairs may indicate a need for expertise.

If you have wood decking, there are several common deck problems that you might encounter. For example, your natural wood boards may fade over time due to things like sunlight, weather, and debris. On top of that, some types of wood decking can rot, grow mold, and attract destructive pests—including termites, carpenter ants, and woodpeckers.

A quality, well-maintained PVC decking can last 30 to 50 years. It’s known for being one of the most durable types of decking materials, with composite decking having a 25- to 30-year average lifespan and some softwood deckings only lasting 10 to 15 years. Luxury hardwood decks like Ipe may last longer than PVC decking, but they can cost more and require more maintenance.

It is possible to build your own deck, but it’s typically better to leave the work to a decking professional. Decks can be exceptionally complicated, especially if you want a wrap-around or second-story deck, and you don’t want to risk making an expensive or dangerous mistake. It’s usually better to hire a decking pro who can pull permits and build a structurally sound deck that will last for decades and provide the maximum return on investment.

As with patios, there are many types of deck choices to choose from to add personalization to your home. Some common deck options include:

  • Attached decks are anchored to the home and include simple ground-level options or multi-level structures with stairways and separate landings.

  • Detached island decks are not attached to the home; they’re a freestanding structure in the yard.

  • Wraparound decks connect the back of the house with at least one other side and often are built with railings for safety.

  • Multi-level decks connect your deck through varying levels of elevation, featuring landings that are attached to stairs.
