"My deck was in major need of a structural repair because it had safety issues. The deck is still in good overall shape so I did not want to tear it all down and start from scratch. After several attempts contacting other company’s, John was the only one who reached out to me and was willing to do this kind of repair. It is so sad that other companies are not willing to take on “smaller” jobs or at least with a fair estimate (I find they overbid for job they don’t want to do so you say no). But by no means was this a smaller job. John and his crew worked very hard to fix the problems and get the job done. John is very knowledgeable and dependable and I would highly recommend him. Thank you to John and his crew for making my deck safe and usable again!"

"I am a 73 year old disabled female that could barely get into my own shower/bath tub with assistance from my caregiver. I moved into an apartmemt that had a regular bathroom set up. Brody installed a different shower system AND multiple hand rails that are absolutely amazing. I now have some of my independence back in the bathroom. Brody & his assistant were completely professional, proficient, courteous and explained everything as the process went along. They were EXTREMELY fast but also the work was TOP QUALITY... I want to add that Brody and his assistant made sure they cleaned their area each time they left... I think the whole process only took 3 days and that's with waiting on a part to come in. Its hard to find professional, reliable, courteous people that provide such quality work results such as them. I am MORE than satisfied with my experience. I will ABSOLUTELY call them again for ANY handy work in the future. A+++++++++"

"Better living was extremely responsive and helpful even though my project was fairly small. I had a very hard time getting other contractors to come out for a small project. They worked through all the city permit issues, then came out and demolished my old deck and build a beautiful new one in about a week. Everyone I spoke to throughout the process was very helpful. Highly recommended!"

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

You can enclose an open carport, however, there are several things to consider before opting to do so. You'll want to check local building codes and permit requirements before proceeding to make sure it’s legal. While you can sometimes stick-frame a carport enclosure, pre-fab kits are also available. Remember that you'll likely need to meet concrete slab regulations and provide lighting inside the structure. Both of which could substantially drive up costs.

The cost to convert a carport into a garage averages about $22,000, ranging from about $15,000 and $55,000. Additional cost factors to consider include size, time of year, and how much of the carport you can reuse. Other cost factors include the kinds and amounts of materials used, such as:

  • Add insulation: $1 per square foot

  • Add drywall: $1–$3 per square foot

  • Add window: $450–$2,000 per window

  • Add outlets: $75–$500

  • Add garage door: $250–$11,200

  • Enclose framing: $5–$13 per square foot

  • Replace roofing: $1,000–$2,000

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.

If you remove a load-bearing wall to create an entrance to a carport or covered patio, you can expect to pay between $3,200 and $9,500, with an average cost of $6,400. Factors such as the type of addition and if that area needs additional work will add to the price.
