"They did a remodel of my upstairs and did an amazing job. Even with all the shortages and supply issues, they delivered on time and were great at communicating any issues. Will definitely use them again."

"Eliot has done numerous projects for me and I am never disappointed. He was quick to get me his bid and willing to explain anything I didn't understand. I found his pricing to be very competitive and we discussed any changes that may have needed to be made. He trimmed out the windows in my home, repaired some damaged siding and all the work was done in a timely manner. I especially appreciated his job site cleanliness. I highly recommend Wood Remodeling for any home remodel."

"I was no able o choose multiple services, but Wayne not only remodeled the kitchen, but also the laundry and will be replacing our decks. This is a log home and comes with its unique challenges. Wayne was efficient, skilled and produced high quality work in a very timely manner. Beyond that, his customer service is stellar and he is a pleasure o work with. I highly recommend!"

"It was fine. The original design didn’t meet my needs based on the information I provided them. However, they revised the plans which worked out better for me. They were able to get the first draft to me pretty quickly."

"When he removed the old shower unit in our bathroom he found a leak. It was a pretty bad one, coming from the roof. He then inspected my roof, and was able to fit the cost of the roof into the cost of the bathroom remodel for not nearly as much money as I thought. He did an excellent job. He had the roof done in one weekend and fixed all the drywall that needed replacing because of the leak."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

A finished basement does not always count as square footage, as this varies by state regulations. In areas that allow below-grade spaces to be included in a home's official square footage, the basement must typically meet certain conditions. These conditions often include having a functional egress and being a livable space with flooring, finished walls, and temperature control. To be certain, contact your local assessor to confirm your area's specific policies regarding basement square footage.

Building a bar in the basement will likely add value to your home, although it’s unlikely that you’ll see a significant return on investment (ROI) unless you plan on using the space for you and your guests. If you think you’ll use the area frequently, though, it’s probably worth the investment, and you should see a bump in value if or when you sell your property.

There are several small, inexpensive upgrades you can make to upgrade your basement. Although you still need to adhere to building codes and obtain permits when necessary, you can complete small but mighty tasks like painting the masonry walls and installing entertainment devices to make the space more usable.

Yes, in most cases, finishing a basement is worth the cost. The project adds valuable, usable square footage to your home and typically provides a return on investment (ROI) of 70% to 75%. For example, an average basement refinishing project costing $32,000 could add between $22,400 and $24,000 to your property's value. The final value added depends on factors like your location, the quality of materials and workmanship, and the features you include, such as a living space, bedroom, or bathroom. To be officially counted in your home's total square footage, the finished space must comply with all local building codes, including requirements for points of egress. However, in areas prone to flooding, a finished basement might be seen as a liability by potential buyers and could potentially decrease your home's value.

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:

  • Replacing insulation

  • Replacing carpet or other flooring

  • Adding heating and cooling

  • Adjusting or adding walls and doors

  • Altering or adding plumbing elements

If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.
