"I have been using them for 3 years for multiple projects and would not go to somebody else. They also built a cabin in the woods. It was built 10 miles from the road so it was like carrying all the stuff up the path. They also did the garage and remodeling of the house, mostly kitchen and a little bit of plumbing work in the bathroom. I am still using them and I would be using them for the next thing that will be coming up too."

Install Stair Railings questions, answered by experts

Generally 1-2 weeks, depending on project complexity and material availability.

Wood and metal are the two most common materials used. Breaking it down further, homeowners tend to use a slightly higher grade of wood than they might elsewhere—it isn’t uncommon to see maple, mahogany, redwood, and other luxury woods used. Metal tends to be aluminum or steel due to the fact that you don’t need very protective metal, as the material isn’t being subjected to any weather.

Permit requirements for repairing or replacing railings vary by location. Many municipalities require permits for structural work, particularly when it impacts safety or building codes. While minor repairs or replacements that don't alter the structure may not require a permit, significant changes affecting structural integrity or design often do. It is best to check with your local building department or authority to confirm specific requirements, learn about potential inspection fees, and ensure your project complies with all regulations. Obtaining the proper permits ensures your work meets local safety standards and can help avoid complications if you decide to sell your home.

The four-inch ball rule, also known as the four-inch sphere rule, is a safety requirement for railings on structures like decks and stairways. It states that a four-inch sphere should not be able to pass through any gap in the railing system. This applies to the spaces between balusters or spindles, as well as the gap between the bottom rail and the deck surface. The purpose of this rule is to prevent small children and pets from accidentally squeezing or slipping through the railing.

Premade or stock staircases are a common choice because of their affordability and easy install. These structures cost between $1,000 and $2,000 depending on materials, size, and design.

Custom staircases are more costly—between $5,000 and $10,000 or more—but are great for unique spaces and main staircases that beg for a grand focal point. When opting for a custom staircase, plan to work with your contractor on design blueprints and project timelines.
