Latex paint is one of the best paint types for textured walls. This water-based paint is fast-drying and has low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it safer and more convenient for painting walls that require several coats of paint. 

If you’re painting exterior walls, you can also consider using oil-based paint, but keep in mind that it takes much longer to dry and can slow your project down considerably.

Aside from the primer and paint choice, consider other cost factors that can impact the overall price of your interior painting project. For example, the following items are likely to increase the cost of your project:

  • Time of year

  • Lead or asbestos testing

A 7 to 12-inch wide microfiber or synthetic paint roller with a nap of 3/8 to 1/2 an inch will give you smooth, even paint coverage on interior walls. After painting, air out the painted area for at least 48 to 72 hours by opening windows and using fans, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The process helps disperse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) the paint emits, reducing their concentration indoors. However, in some cases, especially with oil-based paints, airing out for extended periods may be necessary. Monitor air quality and continue ventilation until paint fumes dissipate significantly.

Stucco will dry in two to three days, but you should wait one to two months to allow it to cure fully before you paint it. The curing process is slow, but leaving the material exposed to air and natural moisture will help it reach its maximum strength. If you live in a hot, arid climate, wait a month before painting. Wait two months before painting if you live in a more moderate or wet climate.
