"I went to Bend Lock & Safe just yesterday to get a hopefully secure chain and lock for my fat-tire Ebike, after they were recommended by Nextdoor Neighbor as being honest and helpful. A young man, Jimmy, helped me and was very nice. I was all set to give a good review until my husband found the EXACT same ABUS lock (83CS/50) online today for under $25. I wanted to support local vs ordering online but not at the ridiculous mark-up that BL&S charges. I paid $77.45 just for the lock-not including the chain. Also, the box my lock came in has a sticker of $65.30, which I didn't realize until today?. So I was overcharged $12.15 on the ABUS lock ... aside from the crazy mark-up. I also thought the display price BL&S has of the chain samples included the cloth protective sleeve, as I saw no mention o it not being a "unit" price, but that's an extra charge I wasn't expecting. I realize that BL&S is a business, and businesses have a mark-up,but that's a ridiculous percentage and I feel ripped off and scammed and feel like returning the whole set-up. Now I don't even feel sure that I was guided correctly to a good secure chain and lock set up.?"

Many local hardware stores have the equipment to copy basic keys at a low cost. Some locations may have freestanding machines where you can pick out a blank and insert it and your original key into the duplicating machine.

Over time, latch components may wear out or get grimy, leading to this problem. First, check for dirt, dust, or debris in the latch mechanism to ensure smooth operation. Use an aerosol duster and lubricant to clean and loosen. You may also need to tighten the screws in the component, adjust the strike plate, or replace the lock. If none of these steps resolve the problem, consult a professional locksmith.

Proper door lock maintenance includes keeping the locking mechanism clean and clear of dirt, dust, and grime buildup, lubricating the lock annually, inspecting and tightening the lock regularly, and treating the door with care. If your maintenance reveals problems, it may be time to replace the lock or have a professional inspect it.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

If you’ve experienced multiple lockouts in the past year, or your lock is responding slower than usual after you key in the passcode, it might be time to upgrade to a newer one. Even if your lock is working fine, you should still change your access code at least twice a year.
