Some states mandate that anyone doing plumbing work hold a plumber’s license, and some municipalities in other states require licensing, so it depends on where you live. However, hiring a certified plumber is usually best, even if it's a higher hourly cost and the license isn’t a state requirement. Certified plumbers are more likely to have the experience necessary to get your repair done properly, meaning a lower risk of issues occurring afterward. You also have some recourse if a certified plumber makes a mistake, as you can report them to the certifying authority.

Hoses can constrict over time. If water isn't coming out of your garden hose, it might be clogged by dirt, rocks, insect nests, and other debris that can find its way in there. If the weather's been cooler lately, water can freeze inside hoses and create clogs when it doesn't melt fast enough. If the water is hard where you live, minerals can build up in the hose and constrict it further.

Running water can help melt ice inside the pipe, but only up to a certain point. If your pipe is frozen solid, adding water will not likely resolve the issue. Water will begin to flow through the affected pipe once the area is heated by a plumber, signaling the issue is getting resolved.

Garbage disposals fit the drains of nearly every sink out there due to universal drain hole sizes of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, but the same isn’t true for the housing underneath the sink. You need plenty of room to fit a garbage disposal under there, so measure the space ahead of time and use those dimensions when shopping for a new model. If you’re replacing an existing model, get one in that size.

If you want to avoid using a snake to unclog a drain, or if you don’t have one, try vinegar and baking soda. Pour 1 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Wait for 15 minutes, and then run hot water (but not boiling water) down the drain to see if the clog is clear. Repeat multiple times as needed.
