"At first it was all good he was a nice guy I thought he was there to help. He did our roof brand new when we bought the house in the beginning of 2019. From the day we moved in we noticed a leak in the bathroom fan literally dumping in. But since then it has leaked and other then doing tiny caulking fixes cori hasn’t actually fixed anything now on my 4 year old roof every board and truss is warped. He’s came back every year now and my roof still leaks. The last time he came back to replace the 3 year old roof pipe flashing rubbers that were rotted and destroyed my flooring my walls and my ceiling. He gave me this big huge story about how he was going to get another company to buy him shingles so that he could do a big section of my roof that he admitted was something wrong. However instead he has since ghosted me I have pictures and videos of things that as an ex roofer I would have never done and I would have torn it up and replaced it at this point but it’s going to be too late soon my children and I have no choices as I sit here and watch my house my life savings be ruined by this gentleman’s work. I do not and cannot recommend him. The photos will show the holes in the rubber boots after 3 years and the warped sections of the roof. I can also get pictures for the flooring that had to be replaced as well as the walls. In person it looks a lot worse then in photos but some of the drops in the trusses and wood are inches below where they should be now I have water damage in my ceiling and the shingles are all lifting as well as now he has been ghosting me after he tried to blame iko but iko says he installed the roof wrong and even offered to help give him caulking to get the shingles to stick back down."

"I was surprised it only took about 4hours total, even with the last minute change we requested. My biggest concern was not to lose indoor light. Everything turned out beautifully!"

"Ordered and paid for custom awning that was to take 5 weeks. Its now been 16 weeks and still waiting. Owner is at best noncommunicable and at worst, rude. I'm now wondering if this is a scam and not a real business."

Awnings questions, answered by experts

Costs depend on material type, design complexity, and additional features like lighting or gutters.

The longest-lasting awning materials include vinyl, polycarbonate, and polyester for their durability and cleanability. Other materials like canvas and metal can last a long time, but may wear out faster. The key to getting the longest life from your awning material is to maintain it properly by cleaning yearly, keeping debris from gathering on it, and protecting it during stormy weather or high winds by retracting it or moving it to a protected area.

It’s not a good idea to allow heavy rain to fall on your awning, as puddling can occur and overload the awning. Your awning should be able to handle a light rain, though you should allow it to dry out before retracting it or open it to dry as soon as the rain stops. As always, consult manufacturer guidelines for using and caring for your awning.

Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:

  • Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire

  • Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning

  • Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings

  • Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust

  • Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option

  • Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage

To make sure the installation process goes smoothly, try asking your pro the following questions:

  • Do you have insurance and a professional license to do the job? Installing a metal or canvas awning into a home’s exterior can be tricky, so ask your pro if they have the correct licensing and insurance to do the work.

  • What was the price of similar jobs in the past? Awning installation costs will vary depending on size, design, location, and other factors. Ask this question to get a feel for the average price range for jobs similar to yours.

  • How long will this project take to complete? Installing an awning is typically not too time-consuming, but hurdles can always present themselves. Gathering an estimated timeline could give you some peace of mind.

  • Will I need to get a building permit? Your local contractor will be well-versed in rules and regulations regarding building permits and other requirements to bring a project up to code. A seasoned pro will be able to furnish this information when discussing the quote.

  • Do you have any references from previous clients? A competent pro should readily hand out contact information for previous clients. Email or call these clients to hear about their overall experience.
