"If you are in need of foundation repair, I highly recommend JC Pro Foundation. I recently used them to install piers at one of my rental properties. Their service was excellent from start to finish. They arrived at the jobsite at the designated time with a large enough crew to complete installing 13 piers in one day. My tenants were very complementary of how the workers took care to cause as little disturbance to them as possible. I’ve also used them to make repairs at a property that was under contract to sell. They arranged their work schedule to accommodate our short timeframe so the property could close as scheduled. They did a GREAT job. "We used Vesta Foundations for our driveway repair. Mike, Omar, and Rudy did an incredible job and were very professional. They explained the different phrases as they completed each repair which was very helpful. They used a foam to fill in the voids underneath our driveway and also sealed our joints and put a drainage system from our gutters to carry the water on down the side of the driveway."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Fireclay is a type of clay but it is a type of clay that, because of its chemical composition, can be fired at a much higher temperature than other clays. This results in a denser and more heat-resistant final material. Because of the high percentage of a mineral called kaolin, fireclay sinks are smoother and more durable than other clay types.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

Yes, as long as the cut is clean and the brick remains structurally sound, you can reuse it. Reusing brick is especially common for landscaping, edging, and small masonry repairs. Just make sure to file down any sharp edges before handling or installing it.

Cobblestone can be made from many different types of stones but the most common ones, by far, are granite, basalt, limestone, and sandstone.  If you are laying a brick paver patio or other such project, the medium is different. It’s rare, but cobblestone can also be made from marble, slate, jasper, and other types of rock. Technically, you can make cobblestone from almost any type of rock, but if it is weather-resistant and stands the test of time is another question entirely.

The cost of masonry work varies widely depending on the type of masonry along with common cost factors like size, complexity, location, and season. Most exterior masonry work done in freezing temperatures tends to cost more because of the preparation and protection involved to keep the masonry from freezing before the mortar cures properly. The average price ranges per project or square foot for different types of masonry include:

  • Brick wall (fence, garden wall, etc.): $10–$45 per square foot

  • Natural stone wall: $40–$110 per square foot

  • Manufactured stone veneer: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Brick home exterior: $10–$30 per square foot

  • Brick siding: $3–$10 per square foot

  • Stone siding: $35–$50 per square foot

  • Brick step replacement: $20–$30 per square foot

  • Brick wall repair: $20–$40 per square foot

  • Chimney repairs: $160–$750 per project

  • Tuckpointing: $5–$25 per square foot
