While you can put Drano in a sink with standing water, most plumbers don’t recommend doing so. It usually doesn’t help to clear the clog, and you’ll end up with a sink full of standing water plus a toxic chemical—which is very unpleasant to deal with and best handled by a professional.

No, you should avoid using liquid drain cleaners. These chemicals, often packed with sulfuric or hydrochloric acid, can wreak havoc on your pipes, causing erosion and potential leaks. They’re also dangerous to your health. If you’re dealing with a stubborn clog, manual removal or a professional plumber is your best bet. Chemical drain cleaners can often make things worse, especially if the clog stays put and the chemicals linger in your pipes.

You can fix a leaking outdoor spigot by replacing the washer, tightening the bonnet, or replacing the spigot altogether. Turn off the water supply and open the spigot to see the issue. You may need to tighten the bonnet by 1/8- to 1/4-inch of a turn. You might also need to see if the washer is damaged or worn. If those fixes don’t stop the leak, you should replace the outdoor spigot. Consider a frost-proof sillcock to prevent future freezes and leaking. 

In some situations, you may be able to try an alternative to repiping your bathroom. If you’re dealing with substantial clogs, for instance, you may be able to have a plumber come out and clear the clog. But if you’ve tried other repairs and are still dealing with issues, you can opt for epoxy pipe lining as an alternative to repiping. This method coats the inside of the pipe with an epoxy to seal holes or cracks.

In most cases, it’s better to repair a toilet than to replace it. Fixing issues like low water levels, running water, and flushing problems is less expensive than buying a new unit. Start thinking about replacement if the toilet is cracked, using excessive amounts of water, or is over 15 years old. Newer models are more water-efficient and clog less often than older models.
