Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Gently insert a plumbing snake down into the pipe, move it back and forth, and pull it out. Remove any hair, debris, and soap scum that comes out with it. Repeat the process until the snake comes out clean, and then reinstall the cap on your overflow valve.

Your toilet handle might not come back up if the nut is loose or the bolt threads are stripped. Try to tighten the mounting nut and wrap plumber’s tape around the handle bolt to fix stripped threads. It’s possible the handle was improperly installed. If that’s the case, you can use the instructions above to correct the handle’s position. 

The time it takes to fix a leaking pipe is determined by the location of the leak, the extent of the damage, and the experience level of the person completing this task. If you're not sure whether you have a functioning hookup, you can call a plumber to come and assess your setup for you.

It’s usually best to hire a certified master plumber to perform plumbing work in your home. Certified plumbers will be able to tackle most plumbing jobs and will have experience with drainage problems, water supply pipes, and appliances. This type of plumber is the most expensive, but the price is well worth it. You could opt for a journeyperson or an apprentice, which will be more affordable, but the reduced experience means your repair may not be as high-quality. Avoid hiring a handyperson for plumbing work unless you’re dealing with a simple issue, like a clog or a leaky faucet.
