Start by unscrewing the overflow valve, which is located on the wall of your tub between the floor drain and the tub spout. Gently insert a plumbing snake down into the pipe, move it back and forth, and pull it out. Remove any hair, debris, and soap scum that comes out with it. Repeat the process until the snake comes out clean, and then reinstall the cap on your overflow valve.

You can tell if your toilet fill valve is full by removing the lid and taking a look. When you flush the toilet, the float is at the bottom of the tank, the water empties, and the fill valve opens. The float rises to the top as the tank fills again with water. When the float rises to the right level, the fill valve closes; if the valve is too high, your toilet may only partially flush, requiring you to adjust the float. 

You might be able to find your pipe leak by doing a visual inspection around your appliances and under your sink. Don’t forget to check your water heater too. If you find moisture or puddles of water, then you know you’re on the right track—you may need a repair or water heater replacement.

Knowing how to find a water leak can be tricky, but you can try the paper towel method. Lay paper towels on the floor and see where the moisture lands. You can also wrap toilet paper around pipes to locate a small leak.
