"We purchased a fixerupper and tried to get the Breaker Panel replaced for 4 months to no avail. One contractor came but never gave us a bid. Another told us he was very busy and put us on his list. When the 45 yr old panel started to arch and lights blinked we called the fire dept and they encouraged us to find an electrician asap. We found a company that said they were available day and night. That proved not to be true. We were scheduled and rescheduled days out. We had contacted HomeAdvisor who put us in contact with True Fuse Electric. Brad Will examined our issue, rearranged his scheduled and got a new panel installed days before anyone else would even come. Mr. Will was helpful to explain everything to us. He was prompt and his work is neat and clean. We have confidence our electrical issue has been adequately repaired and at a very fair price. Knowing we were anxious about the situation he could have charged much more but his price was quite fair. We are very pleased and Glad to recommend True Fuse Electric. Thanks Home Advisor for connecting us."

"Great experience from start to finish! I would be happy to recommend his services to family and friends. Throughout the process he was punctual and communicative, I was always well informed what was happening. During installation of the panel he discovered a bad meter box that needed to be replaced, it was unavoidable. He was able to complete both repairs in a timely manor. Due to what work was performed a state inspection was required. it passed with no issues. For me, the whole experiences was great, I never felt pressured into any repairs that were out of the scope of what I was asking for. 5 stars from this guy!"

"The electricians and plumbers were very professional in their demeanor. They worked as a team, everyone knew what to do and how to do it. They answered all my questions, but didn't let that distract them from their job. I was impressed with the speed of the installation. They cleaned up after themselves and took their trash with them."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

While standby generators provide essential backup power, they can fail when you need them most due to lack of maintenance, fuel supply issues, dead batteries, electrical problems, or improper installation. To avoid costly failures, professional installation and regular maintenance are crucial. Licensed technicians ensure safety, uphold warranty requirements, comply with regulations, and provide expert servicing.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Yes, in most municipalities, you will need a permit to install a permanent home generator, including emergency backup, partial-home, and whole-home models. Because these installations involve significant alterations to your home's electrical system and produce exhaust fumes, local governments often require a permit or inspection for safety purposes. A generator permit typically costs between $50 and $250, depending on your location. Your electrician or certified installer can usually handle the permitting process for you, but you will be responsible for the cost. It's a good practice to confirm with your installer that they will pull all necessary permits before work begins.
