In particular, regular sweeping and annual polishing and sealing will keep them looking beautiful and prevent wear and damage.
You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.

Four of the most basic tools needed in tile installation include a notched trowel for applying tile adhesive, a tile cutter or saw for cutting tiles to size, tile spacers for creating the appropriate amount of space between tiles, and a grout float for applying grout.

Don’t use non-vitreous tiles, or tiles fired at low temperatures, because they will absorb more water. No, you don’t technically need a cement backer board for a wall tiling project, but not using it risks disastrous moisture damage. Cement is naturally water-resistant, whereas drywall soaks it in, which can lead to warping or mold growth. Always use a backer board treated with a waterproof membrane for bathrooms and other chronically damp areas to ensure complete tile shower waterproofing.
