Sink discoloration from water is caused by any of a number of different kinds of minerals in hard water, including iron and manganese. To create a siphon break and remove any chance of dirty sink water or water that backs up into the sink from getting into your dishwasher, your dishwasher drain hose needs to have a high loop or an air gap device as part of its installation. All building codes require at least a high loop. In many places, it’s necessary to install an air gap device to meet the code.

This varies based on your location and the plumber’s expertise, but on average, a plumber will charge $45 to $200 per hour. You can ask your plumber for flat-rate pricing for this sort of one-off project, too.

Unclogging a drain costs between $150 and $350 if you have a plumber come to your home. But that just covers the drains in your home. It can cost over $1,600 if there’s a main sewer line clog. If you’re able to use a snake or drain bladder on clogged drains, you can save money and leave the bigger jobs to the pros.

There are several types of sink drain stoppers, including pull-out, twist-and-pull, and pop-up. Pull-out sink stoppers can be removed by pulling on the stopper until it comes out of the drain. A twist-and-pull design requires lifting then turning the stopper to lock it in an open position and the opposite action (turning, then pressing down) to close it. A pop-up sink stopper works by pushing down the drain cover to open or close the passageway.
